I think they shelved the rework because the more they looked into him the more they realized that he needed almost no changes to be viable.

Okay wait I can teach you how to play malzahar. First point into Void Zone or whatever the AoE Pool Tormented-soil-esque thing is.
Max it first and use it on enemy melee minions. You want to use it on them from full HP so it gets all of the damage ticks off. Then SPAM your other two spells on enemy minions till you get voidlings. Look at that motherfucker you just got a 1v2 lane because now it's you AND your voidling against just one of them. Autoattack a lot so that your voidling will see you doing it and do it too because the more you AA the better chance you have of getting a last hit.
Uhmm okay summoner spells heal and ignite. Fuck escape spells when they see you spamming spells and Null-Zoning creeps like a fucking boss they won't even TRY to gank you.
use your ult as soon as you see a low HP enemy that you are sure you will kill. Don't spam any other spells like Null Zone before you ult because that's time that could be used ulting and getting a kill. NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES should you ever ever use your ult on an enemy you might not kill because I mean thinka bout it you don't want to go to the trouble of ulting just to get a fucking assist.
Items are AP AP AP AP no survivability because malzahar has his fucking voidling to tank stuff for him. BTW don't be afraid to try to 1v5 most tanks know that a good malzahar, when supported by a tank, can totally 1v5 a team.
