I don't know what the OP is talking about, but I've never had a disc of mine physically break unless I was doing it on purpose, and even then it took quite an amount of force. They don't chip and they're not brittle because they bend somewhat.
Only advantages cartridges had were that there were no load times as the data to play the level was hard-wired into the cartridge, so read times are pretty much instant.
cartridges look cooler and are way sturdier than discs, but discs can hold way more memory
solution: make bigger cartridges :science:
I think the thing actually has like 2 PCB's.
Only advantage cartridges have is nostalgia.
I think cartridges are sexier and reminds me of my younger days. But for newer games I'd rather just get them digitally with Steam and play them on my computer, not have to mess with CD's, and you can never lose or break games from Steam.

UMD's cannot store data; aka saved games.
What was cool about cartridges is that they stored your saved games.
isn;t this basicly what hard disc drives are? a spinning disc inside of a case?
not then, now we could just put a USB drive in there.
granted disks are still cheaper per GB but still
When it comes to the physical device, I prefer cartridge. Especially square cartridges.
When I had a gameboy color I could find every single game I owned. When I moved to advance I lost a game every week or so. Now with the new tiny little cartridges I can only keep track of a few games at a time.
But if you ask me where in the hell any of my Half Life 1/2 CD's are I couldnt tell you.
I want solid state memory again. I mean is something akin to SD cards that bad to ask for?
I mean I hate DVDs, they are so damn slow. A 12x DVD can only put out 16MB/s.
I mean a microSD card reaches those speeds pretty easily. I would love it if I had more games in solid state. Speed up my installs, or load times on a console.
SD cards are cheap, not as cheap as DVDs but they cost as much as a games. I mean bulk 32GB SD cards are $7 each. The only bad part will be how easy it is to lose, but then you have a box for games now same that way I guess.
Cartridges were abandoned for a reason, the only advantage is that they are noiseless.
I've never scratched a disk therefore discs are unscratchable :downs:

And due to the easily manipulated SD format companies would not be too keen on this.

Way to miss the point. Of course they can be scratched, but they won't scratch if you are a bit careful (a cartridge will break if you hit it with a hammer, doesn't mean they are brittle and easy to smash).
While being easier to protect than a CD, which is easily scratched, or a tape, which is easily pulled apart, the chips inside the cartridge could be damaged with enough shock, especially if the case did not keep the chips stable. The exposed contacts could also stop working because of an accumulation of a foreign substance, damage or simple wear.
Also cartridges do have advantages, but all those are negated by the price. PCI-E SSDs are greatly superior to normal HDDs in all aspects sure, but they do cost upwards of 1500€ for like 500GB.
Cartridges can't hold memory for shit.
64gb sized usb stick is eons old technology. We can cram so many shit into so tiny space that it isn't even funny anymore.
Prolly that goldeneye cartridge sized cartridge can store hundreds of gb's if not over a terabyte of data today.
And disks are not that fragile. I own thousands of disks and I've been abusive with many of them. Scratches are the only real danger as dropping them does absolutely nothing, cause they're too light.
Cartridges are awesome, they should be tried to brought bach.

Yeah but we ain't talking about no expensivo-tech.
Just plain SD cards and flash memory.
I grew up with playstation ('96).
I was born too late.

Also cartridges (I only know this from N64 tho) have no loading time.

Blu-Ray disks are super durable, though.
