AVG is far from the best.
How come? What does it do that puts it so far down?
How come? What does it do that puts it so far down?
Well, it relies solely on signatures, has a detection rate that's beaten by a lot of other products, and has some annoying false positives that can lead to a lot of problems.

What does it mean to rely only on signatures?

Sorry, I really know nothing about this stuff :/

it means that if the virus is just slightly different than what's in the database, it wont detect it.

As in, it only relies on a blacklist of known malware. It has heuristics too, but they're not that effective. It's a very basic product, and something you shouldn't rely on.

Yeah, I figured, just making sure (I was going to bring up how it has heuristics). What's wrong with its heuristics? I mean...I haven't had much viruses after I got AVG (and I had a bunch before I did)

Well, for one, all heuristics are quite ineffective and don't improve detection rates by much (generally). AVG's heuristics just isn't as effective as, say, Avira's.
Although heuristic analysis is capable of detecting many previously-unknown viruses and new variants of current viruses, the effectiveness is fairly low regarding accuracy and the number of false positives. This is because computer viruses, just like biological viruses, are constantly changing and evolving. Since heuristic analysis mostly operates on the basis of past experience (by comparing the suspicious file to the code and functions of known viruses), it is likely to miss new viruses that contain previously unknown code or methods of operation not found in any known viruses.
So if someone made a virus that changed its code by a tiny bit every time it needed to..it could go undefeated on a machine protected by AVG?

Well, that's sorta what heuristics are for. It's a matter of whether the antivirus has signatures or heuristics rules for that specific malware.
With a reliance on solely signatures and heuristics, it's impossible to catch everything (which is why a lot of modern AVs aren't very effective). This is why I recommend multiple layers of protection.
step 1: remove avg
step 2: get something better
Step 2: there is no step 2, AV's are overrated.

To an idiot.
Technically they're useful to people who are prone to viruses, which are generally not very computer savvy people.
People that know what the fuck they're doing would do absolutely fine without an anti-virus.
So technically...if you rely on an anti-virus, you're probably an idiot.

Common sense can only get you so far.
Common sense can get you every step of the way. Heck even without it you are probably safe. After UAC got introduced, the user permissions have been nearly universally effective. You don't fucking need shit. The only real danger is if you install the virus yourself. And you'll probably have to look for it yourself too.
Good luck with that.

I tried pulling out the reasoning but then they just threw boxes at me and ignored me. You have to keep in mind that people actually spend money on Antivirus in some cases and often become emotionally invested into arguments at such a point.
Norten 360 should help. i used it and now nothing stands in the way of my evil plans to take over APB

lol
AVG is pretty shit, once stopped me from downloading steam for some unknown reason.
Good luck with that.
I've had excellent luck thank you.

If you disagree with this man you're wrong.
Use Avast! or something like that.
