It's a roguelike
Stop being spergs just because it's not turn based. Randomly generated dungeons, randomly generated everything. Rogue like isn't even a genre. It's just "like Rogue."
And it is. You'd shit yourself if you looked up and saw Spelunky is considered a Roguelike too.

hmm ok spelunky is a roguelike
i hate it when people call this game a roguelike because they're simply 100% wrong
roguelikes are turn based RPGs that feature procedurally generated floors and permadeath
the name comes from the game rogue, and anything that falls outside these constraints is not a roguelike
when explaining to people the binding of isaac i call it a roguelike-like, it has many roguelike qualities but is NOT a roguelike

Exactly.
It's clearly not a roguelike, we get it. It's not just a dungeon crawler either. It's somewhere inbetween.

Ultimately who gives a shit, the game is fun.

and just in case any of you try to play the "roguelike isn't a genre listed on wikipedia" card:

Get skeleton key, get bombs are key.
Get skeleton key, get bombs are key.
spamspamspamspamspamspam
Well, y'know... There's also an item now that just gives you 99 bombs. It's very convenient.
With that I pretty much never fire a normal shot at Chub or Chad. Just drop bombs in their mouths.
Get Pyro, get bombs are key.

fify
So BoI is rougelike-like
I prefer the term roguish, but whatever works.
Also we should quite with this argument; it very likely gets us nowhere, whilst the rest of us could be talking about runs or theories or fanarts.
God damn, I'm loving this game.
On my 6th playthrough ever, I beat Mom's Heart for a second time.
The robo-eye-lazer doohicky made it really easy, especially as Judas using the Book that grants double power.
I also now have all of the characters except for Eve.

you're wrong
like really that's all i can say. you're just wrong. "roguelike" is a genre, and Binding of Isaac is not a roguelike. it has similarities, sure, but, you know, starcraft and civilization, for example, have similarities too, and they're not in the same genre.
I think that i have not unlocked one of the characters the way they were supposed to except for Eve.
I got Magdalene thanks to health ups and Cain thanks to money that i got as Magdalene from blowing up a coin machine from using it too much.

that's uh
pretty much how you unlock them
I freaking love the music of this game.

Don't you guys just hate those runs where it's really slow but you know it's impossible for you to fail? Like max damage/tears Cain with technology two and pill bottle/habit.
Oh what the hell, at the end of a boss I go into this room for the rewards or whatever, take one reward.
Take the other.
Instant death.
What happened there? Is there something I was supposed to know there?

Devil room. Sacrifice maximum life for items.
Aye, the Devil ain't a man of charity; gotta pay the price for power.
Devil room. Sacrifice maximum life for items.
Oh, that's odd.
I did it twice and took all the items no problem and the Devil only killed me on the third time.
I'm on a vacation and I brought Isaac with me on my shitty laptop. It gets slow downs even on lowest setting possible but it's playable and that's all that matters. On my second run today (I have to start over again cause it's a different pc) I found telepills which took me to the error room where I found more telepills which, on the next floor, took me to the error room again. I have only been there once before that on my pc at home :v: Sadly, that run was a failure because later I picked up the dead cat by accident from curse chest, got to mom with 2 lives left and didn't make it.

3rd time beating Mom's Heart, with this shiz. 7th playthough. How many more times until I start fighting It Lives?
did they remove the "nuns" part of "nuns habit" or am I crazy?
[thumb]http://i.imgur.com/BwiBu.png?9308[/thumb]
Beat Mom for the first time. Got "The Tick" as my first item. Shortly afterwards I took a gamble and got "Lord of the Pit". At some point in between those or just after, I snagged a Technology 2. Also ended up getting a ridiculous amount of health ups, which is exactly what I needed. I was hoping to unlock Cain (played a Slot Machine or two until they broke), but I'll take a Mom kill too!
Aye, the Devil ain't a man of charity; gotta pay the price for power.
Although he does have like... frequent flier discounts ([sp]that is to say, Judas' Tongue[/sp])
So BoI is rougelike-like
Clearly it is a rogueesc.
Which is like a Roguelike.

In fact let's look at Spelunky's own site, maybe they'll say it's just a action adventure game with no Rogue-like features at all

It's almost as if your a sperg who can't stand hybrids. The first step is acceptance, and over time you'll heal. In fact here, someone went and helped you out.

Question; Does this burn you up

God I hate that when someone says that Isaac has Roguelike elements, morons like you pour from the walls complaining about it. Just accept that people are going to call it a Rogue-like. Because at the very core definition it is one. It has elements of Rogue in it. It's like Rogue. It's Rogue Like. My statement on the genre earlier was the fact it doesn't have a proper title for the genre, not that it doesn't exist. Like how RPG's aren't called FinalFantasylikes or how Platformers are called Mariolikes.
Binding of Isaac is a Dungeon Crawler/Roguelike Hybrid.
Spelunky is a Platformer/Roguelike Hybrid.
This won't change no matter how loud you shout.
