The item, not the cost. And I'm not sure what happens if it costs soul hearts and you don't have enough. Might just pass through like you said.

I need Wrath of the Lamb bad, already been through the whole base game with every character but Maggy.
Feels like I'm missing most of the harder difficulty that comes with the expansion.
I think this is literally one of the only games that is so hard I get angry about it, realize that's just the charm of the game, and cease being angry.
Just finished the game as Samson, who was the last character I had to do. Fuck yeah. I only had 1 heart left at the end of the battle with ???, which made it even more epic.

I get less mad at games like this than I do about games like meat boy or I wanna be the guy. If I die in BoI, I think one of two things:
A) I had shitty luck with drops that run (couldn't be helped) or
B) I can do things differently next time to improve how I did.
Whereas with a game like IWBTG, I feel like I'm bashing my head against a brick wall waiting until either the wall or my head is destroyed. And whichever one it is, it's not a satisfying resolution.

So I was playing as Judas and I found Technology. Had great fun shooting lasers everywhere.
Then I found Polyphemus.
Holy shit I oneshotted everything in the womb. When mom's heart spawned enemies I blew them away so fast that bitch didn't even have time to hide. It was a thing of beauty.
Remembered I had a bit of money, so I picked up Wrath of the Lamb while it was on sale.
All I can say is fuck spiders.
Is it just me or is the Mask of Infamy boss disproportionately hard compared to the rest of the Depths bosses (even Mom)? Was quite a workout to punch through his (invisible) health pool without a laser.

I found him stupidly easy.
He didn't even have any projectile attacks, so I was golden.
But then I DID have like two rows of health, split-shots, and buffed range, damage, and fire rate.
Fighting Mask of Infamy when you have low speed is such a pain.
Also I got Brimstone, then got Poly(The big eye item), will I get Max damage from this combo, or something?

Isaac's head has piercing shots, though. It's a better familiar than Brother Bobby if you're willing to sacrifice your trinket slot.

Now I have no hearts, and quite a number of soul hearts. I just picked up 1up, and a HP up item.
The HP up item did not give me an extra heart container, so I assume I can no longer get red hearts.
What will happen if I die with the 1up, and no red hearts? Will I respawn with soul hearts?

I think the problem was that you used up one more heart then you could, so you have to get another hp-up to fix it. Not sure about 1-up, you will probably respawn with 3 regular hearts and no soul hearts.

This is definitely the problem. He's easy to fight, especially in the second phase, but if your speed isn't very high, you can only hit him maybe one time per charge he makes at you.
It's easy to lure him into a loop, charging from the left end of the room to the right, but it's just really time-consuming if your stats aren't very good.
it feels like he takes ages since there's no health bar
Welp, unlocked Samson, whole run didn't turn out too well though.
Enemies seem a lot more dangerous than the base game, especially the green faces.
Dear lord, those bastards.
Beat the final final 'final' boss as Samson, Polyphemus and any other item is pretty much the best combo.

Killed ??? three times in the same run. Used Forget Me Now after the first time and then killed myself in the boss room after the second time. Funnily enough I got almost the same build as last time. :v:
Still no Brother Bobby though.
