I personally don't find it an inherently bad thing, but I see why others don't like it.
The amount of hype behind Bioshock Infinite isn't really justified.
It is by no means a bad game, but the "finally games are art" "10/10" "best game of the generation" are more than a little frustrating.
I enjoyed it, just... Damn.
I never got emotionally attached to any character in this game.

People's preference probably. As for my own thoughts on Bioshock I think this one did the story and atmosphere well, I really loved Columbia, though combat did not feel up to the same level as the story was. It was still overall a pretty good game, though the hype train seems to have left the station on this one.
