I could never get into DF because of how it looked (sue me) but everything else about it greatly interested me. So this should be perfect for anyone that suffered the same fate as me.
Kerbal Space Program is completely free and highly successful. Allowing people to download and play betas/alphas gives a game a much stronger fanbase for when the game actually releases.
This model of payment only worked for minecraft because it was a new kind of game - why in the world would I pay money for this game when I can already get Dwarf Fortress (which has literally one hundred times as much content) for free?
Check out Overgrowth before you completely bash the whole pay for alpha thing. Sure there's some companies that don't handle it very well, but there's also some companies that benefit from it.
Also if i'm not mistaken, Kerbal Space Program is making it where you can't download the latest version until you pre-order it now.

[sp]and it didn't even work for minecraft. The game's development process crashed and burned once they started raking in dosh.[/sp]
Dwarf Fortress is already 3D? unless you're talking about graphics, in which case they're both still 2d.
KSP has stopped releasing free versions(or will soon) afaik, and will leave the last free version as a demo. And let anyone that actually buys it after that have the more recent versions.
Looks promising, although it needs a few big updates before i will consider buying it.
Can anyone who has bought it tell me what the demo is lacking VS the paid alphas? Other than being the most recent build, obv. I noticed something about a 20 ingamedaylimit or something, but other than that..
This looks interesting, but it feels like it's lacking features.
Probably because it's an alpha version?
It's the incomplete version of the incomplete version of the day one release of a game.
I'm surprised it's as complete as it is.
Basically:
If you know how to play DF/are willing to learn it, play DF.
If you can't be arsed to learn DF/it's too difficult for you, play Towns.
Hunger-lock is stupid. My Townies just stand there starving to death, even though there's a stockpile of food. Fools.

I hate Hunger-lock also. It also doesn't seem like they will change it any time soon. They say its a "feature". Maybe if enough people complain they will change it.
To be honest, how can it possibly be a feature? If I'm starving and there's a cooker, a raw chicken and a pan, I'm not going to sit there and starve. I'm going to get up and cook me some food. Having them shut-down completely due to hunger is just nonsense.
And another thing, I hope they add control over the townies soon. Seriously, fucking women charging into a dungeon full of spiders and not retreating just makes me rage.
Is there a load of "Fun" in this? Or is it just bare right now, but has enough features to play it out?
I'll be watching this.

I don't like DF's shit stain of an interface.
^its ascii representation of a shit stain
I've got 15 farms and 5 mills as well as two fully outfitted kitchens, and with just 10-15 civies, and no soldiers, i STILL am spending 99.99% of my time waiting for 2 people to make food while the rest just sit there and starve like idiots. I've tried pig farms and it didn't really help much, still haven't found any iron yet (Has anyone actually found any?)
Maybe it's cause I'm playing the demo still...Is the paid version a bit more optimized? I can't even get my town up and running yet, let alone venture down deeper, because i spend all my time panicking with the lack of food they seem to be able to stir up, even when I'm slaughtering all the animals on the island and harvesting all the trees on top of the farm shit above...
God damn these townies haven no fucking clue how to put bread into a barrel.
Let alone harvest the fields. Everyone just stands around instead of harvesting them, and then one guy decides he will and then just leaves the wheat there on the ground...5 minutes later of him just standing on it a DIFFERENT guy comes along and throws it in the mill, and by now everyone else is either dead or starving so it's like...come on guys!
That was a brand new save and literally the first thing i started doing before even laying plots down for them to sleep was trying to get food, and it still wasn't enough.
The game feels like it can be fun as fuck, but it still needs a lot of ironing out to really actually be playable for any length of time i think. At least, the demo is. Haven't decided whether or not i want to preorder the game yet.
New update preview for 4.1
Hello everyone, it's news time once again!
This time we are here with a 0.41 preview.
First off I think we should talk a bit about the new priorities panel. What will it do? Well, basically it will state each type of queue, ranging from hauling to cooking.
You will be able to designate the priority of each different order type, and give preference to them, so if you were to need more food, for example, you would put food at the top of the list, harvesting second, and everything else underneath. It will definitely give you a more streamlined gameplay experience as giving you a bit more indirect control lend's itself to a host of new possibilities!

Next up are the new roads. Why are there roads in the game? Because now everyone has slowed down!
We have taken a decision to make the game flow a bit slower in preparation for animations and all sorts of other goodies! Roads will speed people along their way and there might even be special equipment that can help your little guys zip around faster!

Besides a chunk of content, there are now penalties for not building roofs over your workshops.
In order to not dupe the game, building times will be slowed down as there is no roof. Underground building is possible, but will still be slower than building with a roof over your head (I guess it's due to working in the dark... or something...)
We are currently hosting a trailer making contest on our forums, remember to hurry, as it will only be available over the next week! The best trailer will get a hero made after it's creator!
Kind Regards
-SMP Team
Well, then make a torch? @buildings slowing you down
You had me at 'Dwarf Fortress"
How else would they make money during the development? Also, selling the alpha gives people the opportunity to make YouTube videos and such which gives the game a whole bunch of word-of-mouth advertising.
I don't know.. how do mod makers make money during development of their mods? How did the Counter Strike developers make money while developing their mod (back in 1997-2000)?
They had jobs. And modding was a hobby, until it became a career. You can't just say "I'm gonna make a game, here is a promise, give me money for food and rent" and expect it to pay off.
This game is actually challenging.

I fully agree to this. This alpha funding is getting really annoying. Years ago people still managed to release good games without that funding. Although I have to say that it is easier to develop nowadays than before, there are a lot of amateur programmers who want to design their own game but lack the money.
Some games like Xenonauts deserve my money in advance.
I fucking love Dwarf Fortress, and this game shows promise, but there is no way in hell I am paying real, actual money for it.
This indie "sell the alpha" sales model is starting to become a shitty thing. If you're making games because you've got a passion for it, you shouldn't be in it for the money. If you're making games to make money, sell a finished product, not promises.
Well yeah, but i understand they want some money so that they can work on it without having to work a day job as well. Never the less, too many indie devs choose this route for quick money. I'd rather see more people going for the "I'll make a game and if you think it's good you can buy it when it's done".
I find this lacks the same 'charm' that Dwarf Fortress has.
Town is now part of the IndieRoyal Alpha Collection!

Pay five bucks to get Towns, 3079, and Wyv and Keep!
I refuse to get that bundle just because i am unwilling to pay for 3079.

Why?
This looks horribly addictive. Will try it when I get back from work:)
