Judging by how Valve has treated idlers in the past I wouldn't want to do it now.
Last time they removed Idlers' hats and items in TF2. I could only imagine this time launching Portal 2 and getting a message like "Thank you for your participation in helping Portal 2 release sooner. For your efforts, we have locked your copy of Portal 2 for an additional week."
If they didn't expect people to idle they wouldn't require around 3 million hours total of playtime to get it released earlier.

THIRD. PARTY. PROGRAM.
Holy shit, why cant you people just be quiet about idlers, you can idle as much as you want in TF2, you just cant use a program to do it for you.
You have to wonder how much time we would have been able to shave off if all the effort had been put into one or two games. Look how much effort Killing Floor has absorbed for so little return.

KF requires over 1 million hours. If everyone currently participating (21135 people) focused on KF, it would take 48+ hours for each person to finish the bar. 2 days of playtime. That's stupid to get the game released a day, maybe even less, early.
Soo, anything I need to do to get something special at launch? valve like to do these things.
What about that transmission recieved achievment?

When the timer is about to run out everything will go a lot faster I think. And most of those 5000 people playing KF don't own any other potato game, so it's good they are atleast playing that game.
Almost everyone who owns 1.. 2.. 3.. kick it and know of this ARG is playing it right now I think.

Getting every potato gets you something special when portal 2 is out.
How to release portal 2 early:
1) Download easy macro recorder
2) record a macro of you playing a bit in any game and going back to the main menu
3) go to options of the macro recorder (right click tray icon) then set loop to 1000
4) open game, play macro
5) watch tv and become a couch potato

If you have the 36 potatoes you get a non-hat related award on launch. No idea what it is though.

Exactly, imagine if the current hours had been invested in something else.
How do we get a potato in Defence Grid?
Exactly, imagine if the current hours had been invested in something else.
It wouldn't matter. We have to fill every bar.

Watch it be a medal.
Probably a free game.
Are the potatoes even doing anything? We are constantly getting more, but the progress bar doesn't seem to be filling up any faster.
Watch it be a medal.
I swear if it's the companion cube pin model again.....
Probably a free game.
How about any game or any package of games?
I would like to own the Oddbox or the Sega Genesis Collection.
We'll most likely get Portal 2 8-5h before the official release.
It's still great for me, ~11-13.00 on Tuesday. :buddy:

So worth it.
1..2..3..KICK IT needs a slight push and it'll be complete. Everyone play it!

Slight push? We still have to fill up 30% of the bar.

Could I do a loop of me playing the same super meat boy level over and over? That'd be entertaining.

I don't appreciate being lumped into 'you people'. I didn't give a FUCK about idlers in TF2. I just didn't do it myself. But I never persecuted anyone for it so fuck you.
I don't think valve realized that many people who just spent 50$ on their new game are not willing to shell out another 40$ for some indie games only to get an early release.
