It'd really have been nice if Valve specified how the potatoes help and how everything worked, from what I can tell we're just guessing about some things

Game time being logged for a potato game will move the bar. The speed depends on how much time is being logged (moves faster) and the number of players owning the game (actually takes longer/more logged game time). You can just start a game and idle in the background as steam does not track your keyboard input. Running more than one game won't work - only the first one actually counts. Be sure to regularly restart the game as steam will not update your time spend otherwise.
Potatoes are supposed to work as some kind of multiplier, increasing the speed at which every game is completed. Thus, getting potatoes is still somewhat important and you should go and look for them if you don't just want to idle.

Well when I was a consolefag I did it like a champ. It required special maneuvers which I never needed when I ran through it on PC later but I still did it like a champ.

I say we try to do the ones near complete first. So if we dont get any of the big games like killing floor then we can at least get the minus hour bonuses.

I have none of the puzzle games, and I would love to help with Bit.Trip Beat. But of course, I don't have it :c
However I kind of don't see a point in this; can't we just wait? Most of us have school on Tuesday either way.
