GET HYPE.
Hi guys,
So we're considering launching a preorder through playstarbound.com and we'd love to hear your feedback.
Progress on Starbound is actually really good. We're still working on putting up the development roadmap (sorry this is taking a while, it's a spare time thing whilst I work on Starbound). The roadmap will be up before we launch any kind of preorder to give you a good idea of where we're at and what's left to do.
So, why a preorder?
Omni and Bartwe are working a second job whilst working on Starbound to keep food on their table and that keeps them from working full time on Starbound. With a successful preorder they would be able to dedicate their full time to the game and get it out faster. It would also ensure that no one from the rest of the team will need to take a second job before the beta is done.
How would the preorder work?
The way we go about the preorder is very dependent on your feedback, but the plans right now are..
- Preordering would get you access to the beta *when the beta is ready*, the only time line for that is "2013", but you'll be able to track progress on the roadmap. We'll make it super clear when you preorder that there is no guarantee when the beta will be available other than some time within 2013.
- Preordering will be cheaper than buying the game after it comes out of beta
- Preordering through playstarbound.com will get you a steam key when the game hits steam (likely at beta), as well as a direct download.
- The potential for paying more for extras is there (think kickstarter tiers), but none of these extras would be in game items/content. We're committed to making sure you get the *whole* game for a basic purchase. So it'd likely be soundtrack/artbook/name a star style rewards.
- There are lots of payment services we could make use of, BMT micro, humble store, digital delivery or something else. Which would you prefer?
So what do you think guys, does this sound viable to you?
If we do tiers, what kind of rewards would you like to see?
Is the 2013 timeframe too large? Or is opening preorders a good thing if it allows us to get the beta out faster?

Was watching porn then when I saw this news I came early.
Not really.
I saw preorder and immediately went for my credit card.
Sign me the fuck up
I'm actually kind of okay with the "2013" launch time.
I mean, it won't be long now; It's almost April already.
It also needs to be blue because Ultramarines obviously are the only Space Marines.
atleast thats what Games Workshop thinks.
"What Matt Ward thinks" Fix'd. How dare you leave out our spiritual liege!
I wouldn't mind having preorder through the humble store...
My humble account is my largest collection next to steam, so I use it enough
steam preorder for early christmas, obviously
also, bump. starbound thread on page 3? i disagree
Indisputable proof that this will be the best game this year:

Been playing Terraria again and it's fucking fantastic, even alone. Starbound guaranteed game of the decade.

I read that too fast and read "Just made the launcher"
Still, sounds neat. Would you need to catch pigs and combine them with grenades?

Pigs? Grenades? Combine? Well, that's an interesting method of creating bacon?

For some reason the link under my avatar isn't working so here

You only need the custom URL portion, not the entire url. Instead of "http://steamcommunity.com/id/dahthla", try just "dahthla".
I feel that this could be somewhat Borderlands 2 in terms of release considering so far there seems to be a lot of 'placeholder' names and flavor texts for items. I really hope there can be at least SOME serious feel to this game.

They already confirmed a lot of that shit IS placeholder and it'll be changed on release, thankfully
As much as I am excited about this game, it has way too much scope creep going on. The developers seem to be falling right into its trap too.
They really should have hammered down on the game's features early on, it could have cut down on the time table and left them with a much better picture for these customers to have.

Accordion to them, they have finally said 'enough' for now in terms of adding new stuff because the game has to be released sometime. They seem to be finishing up all the current stuff right now.
I, personally think that it will take them at least until Q4 2013 to wrap up, Q1 2014 at the absolute latest. Think that if they break their '2013' deadline they could possibly start seeing an increasingly large trickle of fans finding another interest. No doubt it will pick up again when the game actually launches, but to be an entire year off after they placed this last deadline would do nothing to help them.
And yeah, yeah before I get steamrolled by a wave of rabid fans saying 'YOU DON'T THINK THEY ARE WORKING TO PERFECT AND FINE TUNE IT TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY?! IDIOT!! ITS DONE WHEN ITS DONE!!', I understand that, but at some point you have to call it a day and actually get your game into people's hands. Unless you turn your entire project into sort of a running joke where it's been in development so long (HL3, DNF) that people really don't take you seriously when you say x or why is going to be in the game, yet you won't actually get to experience it until some as of yet indeterminate date.
I'm not saying they won't be great games when they finally do launch (except for DNF which was just total shit), but every inconsistency or delay or 'wouldn't it be cool if we just added this one more feature' is costing them time, money, and consumer interest.
it's honestly going to be a bit ridiculous if they are unable to release it this year
I would so much rather have them continue to work on it and make a better finished product rather than push it out just because earlier in development they thought they might be done sooner. We are not entitled as consumers for stuff to come out on our time. Especially not from a dev like this.

I agree so much with this.

they're going to have updates after it's released, so i think i'd rather see a well polished game with some features upon release, then stay in the groove with updates they release now and then.

It's not entitlement that's the issue. It's the fact that they are pouring work into something they aren't making any money off of. How many years has Starbound been in development? 2? 3?
It isn't easy for an indie for that long without making anything on the project they are working on, as much as they love it. Although they have another game they released earlier, don't they? I imagine they probably also have a part time job or something to compensate though.
How many years has Starbound been in development? 2? 3?
I believe it has only been about a year or so. Maybe a bit more now.

No way it has been in development for only a year. Swear it's been in the works for at least 2.
