It was announced a bit more than a year ago, so definitely longer than that.
Although they have another game they released earlier, don't they?
No, apparently they're publishing a few games though.

Lots of games are in development for multiple years before release. A lot of them are good because of it.

They may be great quality works, but the problem was about when they announced starbound. If they had announced it closer to now that they are actually preparing for a release, they might not lose the same amount of people as they are now.
By making these people who have been watching the game for over a year give up because they failed to meet their timeline or the community's expectations. They just stretched the reveal for too long and have had very little to show for it to the community. If they were more open with their development over the course of the build, then at the very least the community would have concrete evidence of what they were looking forward to, rather than grasping at straws with what was mostly barren content.
If someone gives up on a game because it's taking too long for them, that's on the would-be player.

It's on the developer just as much for not offering that person a good enough reason to stick around. Starbound has been lacking in substantial content reveal the entire process and I think it has hurt them in the long run.

Weren't they forced into announcing it? I heard part of it was leaked way early and they ended up having to announce the game.

If the game itself isn't a good enough reason for them to stick around, you can't count on them to be a customer no matter when you release it.

The point I was trying to make was no one had any reason to believe the game would be good, apart from reading into their concept and a few pieces of promotional art. They had, and still have a very small amount of content in order to tell people about their game.

I agree with G3rman, right now we only know some very basic details about the game itself. Relying on selling/keeping an audience on concept alone is a bit of a reach and will leave people bored.
They say the game has randomly generated worlds, weapons and creatures to explore. That's all fine and good. But how will I get to explore and interact with them? They have literally shown nothing aside from some very simple construction. How in depth does crafting get? Will I need to worry about base infrastructure? Does it matter what I do with the indigenous population on a planet? Will there be trade? How will I need to deal with hazardous materials/environments? Will low level planets still serve a purpose for me, or will they just be discarded?
As far as I know, none of those questions have been answered, and to me they are some of many I have for a large scale space exploration sandbox game that would determine whether or not I would buy it. Those questions are important to me as a gamer/customer, and I want to see how they deal with those types of questions if I'm going to put money down for it. To me, that sort of stuff is the game itself.
So NOW can we agree the devs shot themselves in the foot by announcing the game so early?

Some pretty good questions. I wouldn't be too optimistic about such a high level of consideration towards 'invisible' features like base infrastructure and indigenous populations, but if you pester them hard enough they could include game longevity mechanics like these, and even then there's always modders if you want to pester them or even mod yourself
Personally I ruin the games I want to play for myself by researching them too much, and with this game i've been avoiding exactly that so I can't speculate too much. Nevertheless it's best to be optimistic and supportive rather than disappointed and expecting too many things!

Can there be such a thing? When it was announced I put it on my list of games to look forward to and went on with whatever I was doing beforehand. Are you implying that people lose interest before the game is already out? You might have explained this earlier in the thread but i'm just interested

The only reason I feel this way is because of how everyone else is thinking: Because they announced the game so early in development, there's too many features that can or can't be added. People will get hyped for X feature only to find it was either scrapped or replaced by feature Y.
But yes, people can lose interest in a game that's been announced too early, I'm sure things will perk back up when they finally give us a release date though.
Depends on the amount of content.
It's the full game sans story mode.

Not just in-game. Am I getting full game later on and access to the beta?
Until they narrow down time and offer the "road map" as they call it, I don't think I want to preorder it.
I would be happy paying £10-15 for early access to the game. Especially if it's going to help fund further development.

Ofcourse you are, thats what a pre-order means

getting closer
God damn it I was just telling myself to stop getting so hyped.
I haven't really been following Starbound but damn is $10-15 cheap for a game.
I was highly expecting $20 tbh.
getting closer
I hear that the actual release would be between $10 and $15. So given the choice, for a pre-order, I think $10 would be the better option.
I had 20-25 in mind, but if 15 is the highest they're going, I will GLADLY take the cheaper price. With maybe a five dollar donation later on.
i hope we see something to the story of it soon, like why you are what you are and your situation, to my knowledge nothing like that has been said.

Hoping for $10, expecting $15 but if it comes to that, still willing to pay over $20.
The presence of $60 worries me. The only reason to put that on there aside from kicks and giggles would be if they actually expect the full game to be $60 full price, right?

Player's homeworld is somehow destroyed and player's escape pod comes across a derelict spaceship is all we know.
It's probably just there to see how many people actually think it's worth 60$.
I very much doubt they'd make it that much.
