I liked the particles actually. The weapon still looks like a spartan laser for me.
I would be personally fine with the pre-order costing the same as the end game, since I'd be getting access to the beta and I'm not against these guys getting the money their game's worth, but I understand why people'd prefer not to pay as much. And not just because it'd cost them less.
Especially because you aren't getting a real date, not even a quarter of the year when the game is being released. Or an in-depth feature list or proper display of the game outside of screenshots and outdated videos.
I'm not saying these guys are frauds, I know they are working on the game. That said, they need to work on their presentation and stop the whole 'Our fans believe in us, that means they don't care what we show'.
i kinda hope if they go for a console release they go for the unbeaten path and put it on a nintendo system. sure it may not be the common gaming device of the decade but they could probably do some neat things with an extra screen, rather than terraria "hey we finally made it so if you REALLY wanted to you could play this game on a gamepad, and hey we'll throw in some content PC wont see immediately or possibly at all even though it could totally handle it!"
starbound: "we'll put it on Wiiu and add special features most common gaming PC's couldn't do since it'd require a second touch capable screen"
i wouldn't mind something like that.
edit: man i love this hate, it comes from nowhere with no reason.
Indeed. If they asked for 60 dollars, I would likely pay it. I would not be HAPPY about it, but I would pay it. After all, when you go to gamestop and put down 60 bucks for a PS3/360/Wii-U game, do you complain? No, you expect those games to be about 60 bucks. Why would you begrudge an indy developer that amount? Because you don't feel like you should have to pay that much? Because most of them are willing to sell their product for 15-25 bucks?
It has a double standard to it. The big companies get to charge out the ass, while the Indies better not ask for more than 20 because they're 'one of us'. Like how you might expect a friend to help you move without paying them, and get mad when they ask for some money for gas and time even though it's a perfectly reasonable thing to ask.
These guys worked over a year to try and iron this thing out as best as they could, accomplishing more in that time than Terraria did in its entire run, and that's just what we KNOW of. There's more we don't. And I'm not going to say stupid shit like "I'm disappointed in you", because I know no one here would care. And I'm sure some of you are just hoping it's cheap because you're tight on cash, that's cool too. Really, I just wanted to put something in perspective for the entitled people here in this thread who were all like, "They BETTER not have it more than 15 or I won't buy it".
you have no idea how the industry works and also I cannot even tell you the last time I paid $60 for a game.
it might have been Bioshock. The first one.
when you go to gamestop and put down 60 bucks for a PS3/360/Wii-U game, do you complain?
yes.
I don't buy $60 games

This game on the Wii U would be cool as shit.
And the last time I bought a game for 60 bucks was New Super Mario Bros. U.
Because Nintendo is worth every penny.
I want to see some fucking combat videos already. Building is cool, but where the fuck is the fighting?

Don't forget you're on Facepunch. The WiiU is going to fail because it has poor specs just like literally every other Nintendo console has been a failure due to being technically inferior to the competition.
edit
"AAA" games cost $50-$60 because the market has grown to demand "AAA" production costs.
Labor: Most "AAA" games are made with large teams of developers in addition to all the other staff involved; a small studio could easily have hundreds of people working there.
Tools: The licensing costs for commercial tools tend to be quite large. It can easily add up to millions of dollars to get seats for all the relevant developers. The free-to-use licenses available to indies don't make financial sense at high-volumes.
Marketing: I don't think this one requires that much explanation; games are fighting for attention and in the retail space it takes more than just word-of-mouth to be successful.
Manufacturing and Distribution: The cost of creating boxes, manuals, and disks contributes a small, but not insignificant, amount to the final price. Getting the product into consumers hands can be quite costly and retailers are going to take a cut.
The reality is that the quality of a game doesn't directly correlate with its perceived value in the eyes of most consumers. Starbound may end up being an incredible game, I hope it does, but there is no way it will ever be able to justify a $60 price tag.

Thank you for not just assuming I'm an idiot and actually explaining this to me.
I want to see some fucking combat videos already. Building is cool, but where the fuck is the fighting?
This has me concerned more than anything else, they've said they want the combat to be like SoTN but from what we've seen so far it's extremely barebones.
I know they're still working on it but this means one of two things:
1) we have a long ass ways to go before we actually play this game
or
2) The combat is actually going to be shit.
But Tiy says production is going great so no reason to worry, right?
/sarcasm

The optimist in me wants to believe but they're way too hush hush about all of this.
hopefully the combat doesn't feel floaty and awful like in terraria
terraria was dope, but the combat left a lot to be desired. hopefully they'll make it responsive and not literally impossible due to connectivity issues

Oh man monsters teleporting around was the worst goddamn thing about Terraria, but that was mainly a netcode issue, I'm not worried about THAT part seeing as they confirmed the netcode is pretty spiffy.
The floatiness in general I can see being concerned about, I felt knockback on most enemies was a little too extreme with melee weapons in Terraria, to be fair melee weapons were outclassed fast in Terraria. I'm hoping that's not the case with Starbound.
Fuck. I want to see more footage.
whats worse is T shock server admins that would raise the spawn rate on a HC world so teh screen would flood with flying shit.

As long as they have something that makes noise like the star. I don't know how long I followed people around making 'ding' noises just to bug them.
Anyone remember when the devs talked about a multiplayer director mode thing where admins could make missions and stuff for players on the fly? Is that still going to be in the release?

I used the bell and followed people around with that instead :v:

Could be done if they didn't go for physical copies and went for digital download. Those seem to always cost less as long as they don't have a physical copy counterpart.

SotN combat wasn't too horribly complicated, anyway. You had your seriously OP magic attacks, seriously OP weapons, and most of the weapons had special attacks. It was fairly barebones by itself, or at least I thought so. Combat didn't get more complicated until the PS2 Castlevania games, IIRC.
That said, it was fucking FUN because of that, and I think they've done more but say they want it that way. Didn't they already talk about some of the special attacks weapons could have?
So one of my best friends, who was following this game with me since march recently decided that he doesn't want to talk to me anymore..
I've literally visited this thread every day (More than once a day) since the first page of the V1 thread and I don't know why anymore :/
So now I want to know if this game would be really worth it just playing by myself. Most of the fun seems to come from playing it with friends..
what if it had cortex command particles
and cortex's brutal combat
As cool looking as Cortex Command was, with the particles and whatnot. It made the game a mess and almost impossible to control.
I'm sure there are people in this thread willing to play with you. Which part of the globe do you live at?
