Unlike how black mesa used to be, or episode 3, we've actually been getting regular updates on development. I don't really mind if the game takes a while, but I doubt it'll end up like those.

Can't really compare it to episode 3 though, because episode 3 has the success of all the other Valve games to keep people wanting it, whereas an Indie game which is the first for the company, e.g. starbound, updates are required to keep people interested

I disagree. I think all companies, no matter how successful need to have some sort of update about their game to maintain interest. Valve has done it by constantly hinting or joking about it.
Also, they aren't making 'episode 3', they are making Half life 3 probably on Source Engine 2. They said long ago that their episodic content schedule failed, considering that type of model requires you come out with more than one episode every half decade. It's been six years since episode 2.
But frankly, I have pretty much lost interest in HL3. I am more than hyped for the Source Engine 2, however.

I'm honestly not sure if Valve will ever release another Half Life. They've kind of forced themselves into a situation where it'll be all but impossible to not do something that's underwhelming compared to what people are expecting.

i'm fairly sure you'll immediately jump on the hype train the second another Half Life gets announced, just like everyone else.
