Edit: to answer milk's question: no, it's a different engine. Starbound is inspired by terraria, but they're made on a different engine. For example, Terraria doesn't have flashlight because of the way it's lighting engine works. You can see flashlights in at least one of Tiy's tech demos showcasing it.

Completely new engine they wrote for the game. Everything is new (or at least as new as "new" coding is).

Completely different game. It's only inspired by terraria.

There's no hurry to pre-order though. They've got a ton of pre-orders already so they know a lot of people are eagerly anticipating the game, and you don't get anything extra by pre-ordering asap.

I was planning on getting gold tier at the most.
Mostly I just want the warm feeling that comes with the knowledge that I have it pre-ordered and have nothing to do but wait for release.

Nah, seriously speaking, it both is and isn't a surprise that they are down. When I got mine in, they had 300'ish contribs and almost 10k. This was a couple of hours ago when the pre-order went up.
