isn't the story that all the crazy groups have less crazy groups that are the ones you play as since the crazy ones got blown up or something? i seem to notice that all the descriptions say something like "but there are some who aren't batshit bonkers" and i just assumed that we were supposed to be those guys

Have you seen Framperton's posts? Hell, half the thread's posts? It's pretty obvious they belong to the 'psychopath' section of their race. And most of them are human, which I think says something in and of itself.
