Turrets would be okay if they had a range limit of 1/2 or 3/4 of a screen distance from where they're placed and range mobs being smart enough to shoot at them. And once they run out of health, they have to be repaired to become active again.
What about manned static defences? Turrets or such which you have to mount.

That seems like a good tradeoff. No movement for increased firepower. Maybe it'd take awhile to man and unman a turret as well so you couldn't just fire and leave.
Maybe they'd have limited ammo or something and you could use them to defend long tunnels in your base.

Proper turrets would be nice to defend a base on a really dangerous planet, but only if you're like really far in the tech tree.

I've been beyond excited for this game for too long. I hope we see a beta release by the end of summer. I made my character the day the character creator came out, who remains unnamed because I'm awful at naming.
