Why did that happen? Failed mood? Or was he miserable?

Send the army!
He just suddenly berserked. He then proceeded to kill half of my recruits AND my sheriff. :byodood:
I guess, on the other hand, he cut down some of my population. There's WAY too many people here.
Two rangers were killed in ten second time spans from one another.
Damn troglodytes and naked mole dogs tore them apart.

So he had a mood but couldn't get the items? Check your announcements to see if there's anything regarding that.
My Fotresses Captain of the Guard is one Sgt. Nicholas Angel. :smug:
I've pretty much concluded that this fortress is doomed to fail, it's just a matter of when.
Do any of you have like... a proven-successful method for starting a new fortress? I found a couple of guides, but they're a little hard to follow. :raise:
Plump helmet farming.
No you don't want a siege their harder than you think, unless you have more that 2 squads of well trained dwarfs. Then you should be fine as long as you have crossbows, a wall, a spike hall, and a drawbridge nothing shall pass.
No but seriously one squad of 2 swords dwarfs, 1 wrestler and 5 (unequipt)recruits wont get the job done against a 20 or 30 man siege. In fact if I recall from my previous desert fortress an army of 62 recruits led by my most manliest dwarfs couldn't get the job done.
You must suck, because I take out Orc sieges using nothing but a drawbridge, a wall around my fortress, and a single Marksdwarf recruit. You can also just make a hall of traps, insta-siege-win.

My useless philosopher is called Ed.
Also it should have been Butterman or w/e, since he was, well, Sgt.
My Captain of the guard is called Stone face Vimes, Rainbow if you get the reference

He probably does suck. Having 5 unequipped wrestlers can take on 20-30 goblins easy. Unless they're bowgoblins, then it's harder.
But yeah, Orcs ARE difficult to kill, but when you have a few champions and some solid recruits, it's easy to take em on. Though Orc sieges build up consecutively, so you get 1 squad of orcs the first year, then 2 squads, then 3 etc. Till it becomes almost impossible to kill them with just soldiers. You need traps and other things to help too.
Is the new version out yet?

Not necessarily, my superchamps fought orcs of unspeakable proportions (modded them to hell and back) and I could keep the fort up normally. I did lose 1-2 hammersoldiers (both champs and normals) in each battle against them but I just trained an assload of them at all times to have a steady supply of soldiers into the meatgrinder that was the annual orc siege in Lightblockade.

My captain of the guard WAS Saxton Hale.
He killed Gabriel Knight.
Then he went insane and tried to kill more people, but my army stopped him before he did any damage.
Recently, a dwarf made an engraving of Saxton Hale killing Gabriel Knight.
Is there a way to add custom names to the currently used library?

Well fuck me. I guess it's time to start philosophizing then.
Whenever someone reaches legendary in my fort, they will get a nickname and their own bedroom (not everyone has their own bedroom as I have not reached Economy stage yet)
Any ideas for an epic above-ground fort entrance? My city is pretty much just a huge box, I'm building towers near the entrances that will reach great heights, should I just build a giant drawbridge?
I name EVERYONE in my fortresses, I even give names to migrants who died on their way into the fortress, which considering most of my embark locations, is allot of people.

Have statues at regular intervals leading up to the entrance.
Personally, what I just do is make a massive road that goes from the entrance to the edge of the map.
I'd recommend making progressively smaller towers, with possibly statues at regular intervals nearby the entrance.

Hm... Seems like a cool idea.
What the hell? One of my masons just killed my champion hammer dwarf and made earrings out of him!

Can fish pass through screw pumps?
How often do bookkeepers do their job with highest precision?

awesome
Above ground fortresses; Are you making them out of walls if they're higher than 2 floors? Considering you can't build on constructed-floors, I assume you guys make higher levels out of "wall floors", right? I haven't tried to do anything like that, I like the traditional digging into a mountain side fortresses.

Fell moods do that. Macabre moods are the same, except the dwarf won't kill somebody, he'll just request bones/skin.
My dwarf made a bucket menacing with spikes of steel and obsidian.
It has an engraving of a dwarf being impelled with a spear.
I wonder how the wounded like that bucket to drink from?
I carved my fortress into a side of a mountain, so there's some ground above the entrance, could this make it considered inside? i'm thinking of just extending it with walls so I don't have anymore issues thinking their inside

Yes, it does.

make the walls a huge circle, embark on the biggest map ever. if your computer can take it, it will be badass.
