Again, my fortress' defenses are pretty piss-poor.
Which brings me to this. How do I build effective traps and such? I wanted to build fortifications, but I don't want to waste the resources building something that isn't effective. :raise:
There's only one way in and out of my fortress, and that's through a single hole in a hillside.

Also, why is it that anytime one of my Dwarves gets possessed (like my mayor, just now), they always claim my Craftdwarf's workshop and begin furiously drawing shit?

Because they will make an artifact if they get the items they want. If they don't get the items, they will go insane and kill themselves or go berserk and kill others.

Huh... I guess that would explain a number of incidents.
Also (and I really apologize for the storm of questions; the DF wiki is down), a Dungeon Master just showed up. Anything I should know about him?

The Dungeon Master likes doing a variety of tasks, especially metalsmithing, so don't be confused if he is doing random tasks, there's nothing you can do about it. He can tame exotic pets like dragons and shit, and it's normal for him to be wearing nothing but 10 cloaks.
same here, I embarked on a savage swamp and all I got were goats, troglodytes and swallowmen, they killed maybe 1 dwarf in 4 years, I was hoping for a constant battle with the wildlife
You have to wait a while for them to appear, my very first successful fortress only had a couple mountain goats wandering around, but by the 3-4 year I had wolves everywhere.
Same goes for any other sort of animal that's not labeled as a Megabeast.
well that's too bad, i was on my 4th year when I was decimated by tentacle rape, I think i'll wait until the new version before I make a new fortress
How do I get a well to work 100% correctly? It has to be over water (I know this, but I mean actual water, I heard over a brook doesn't work) and it should have a 3x3 'water source' zone, with the well in the center around it, correct? Anything else that is needed/will make the well not work?

My first fort has just gotten too boring for me. I'm going to settle a new one in a more "fun" location.
Setting out for the Jungle of Cremations, a temperate, heavily forested, thick-vegetationed land with a brook (splatteredframed) and terrifying surroundings.
[editline]03:30PM[/editline]
Oh yeah, this looks great. The land is full of phantom spider webs, we've got us a werewolf wandering around somewhere (according to the unit list) and there are swarms of blood gnats! Oh my dwarves will have SO MUCH FUN here.
Argh, the werewolf has already set to work killing my donkey! Asshole!
Oh this is too funny. The werewolf is just zipping all over the map trying to chase all of my dwarves at once. He killed one of my dogs, but it wounded him, so maybe the dwarves can take him out if they all gang up on him.
Anybody got a link to Visual Fortress? Not one link on Google is working, and the DF Wiki is down..
Here's my biggest project right now (I keep having to expand it for the migrants coming in). The double-wide room near the center belongs to Dishmabreg. And the other large rooms include some offices (with bedroom/dining room attached) and a larger meeting room than I had. The large room under construction on the bottom left belongs to the Dungeon Master.
Also, don't mind the big room off by itself. It's part of a stone storage place.

Why use stone stockpiles? It's such a waste of room..

First off, I wanna ask, have you been cheating? Cause if I'm right, that's one huge-ass copper vein. If so, that ruins the fun so much.
Secondly, rooms are way too big for most dwarves. It's impractical and takes a lot of time to dig out. 2x3 rooms are usually more than enough (if smoothed) but most 2x2 rooms suffice.
My rooms are 1x3.

Copper? That red area is Kaolinite. I don't know how to cheat and I have YET to hit any ore.
Also, the stone stockpiles keep the rest of areas clean looking. The 3x3 rooms just seemed right to me. Every dwarf with a room gets a bed and a place to eat.
Just dump the stones.
Lol, I got a Kobold ambush, and one of them attacked one of my recruits, hit her baby, and cut the babies' entire right arm off :v:
Shit man, two of my dwarves have been killed by a werewolf. Now they're miserable and throwing tantrums. I just have to hope they can work through it.
On the (very small) bright side, we've already struck magnetite AND native platinum on the third floor!

Or hide them.

Dig much deeper. Make a lot of exploratory one-tile wide long tunnels. Try going like 6-7 Z-levels below the surface and dig there.

Orkel, what are those brown stones? Is it not copper? lol haven't played in ages.
It's stone.

It's a tileset, I have no idea.
Yeah, it's mudstone.
You have dug deeper than that to search for ore, right? Several layers down?
:C I'm down to 4 dwarves now. Goddamn werewolves.
You have dug deeper than that to search for ore, right? Several layers down?
Going to. Been busy with other things happening.
I gotta' go to work, but next chance I get I will be.
Oi. Setting up stairs correctly still confuses me. Can upward and downward stairs be right above/below (respectively) each other or do they have to occupy separate areas?
(Feel free to give me boxes, but I'm still learning. This game is deeper than I gave it credit for)
upstairs go directly below downstairs
Fucking awesome, 2 years game-time; all lost. I crashed. :crying:. I finished my epic gate, and started on my ginormous walls, and it crashed before I saved. ;-;
