This I usually mess up somehow around my 5th year and it always includes magma or water.
You make it farther than I do. I usually succumb to crazy, hungry dwarves tearing each other to shreds.
I've never had hunger problems. Even when I was terrible, I always died from trying to divert water to the front of my fortress but flooded everything.
boredom or tentacle demons do me in
I usually end up losing forts to boredom or lack of enough sieges. Or annoyance when my ballistamen kill my mayor, champions, and all my useful dwarves with one dumb shot.
Made bolts do blunt damage like the hammers damage.
Yea...
Made bolts do blunt damage like the hammers damage.

I can't even begin to comprehend how that would work in real life....
Maybe a fist attached to the end of the bolt?
The new version can't come fast enough.
maybe I'll start a Facepunch succession game
I'm sure everyone will think you're the coolest dude on the planet once you do that.

thanks bro
[editline]06:14PM[/editline]
how do I figure out how many years my fortress has been through
You hit Z and look in the top right at the year number.
Every fort starts in the year 201, so subtract that
mine's been around 11 years then :D
That fortress (not quoting it) is way too... complex. It must take forever for your Dwarves to get shit done.
I'm very much in to keeping things neat and tidy.
(Big picture, thus the link) My fortress basically follows this format all the way down. However, there is a jail-in-progress a few layers below.

Unless you start in a different year.

Yeah I like to keep my fortress simple and logical too

I didn't even know that was possible

I know right, it was a mess. But because it was my first fort I kept going with it untill I lost. Now I know the most important stuff to begin with and able to have a new, good start.
And Orkel, we should try that spectator thing, makes things easier instead of broadcasting all the time.

Do we have to start a new game when the new version comes out?
You make it farther than I do. I usually succumb to crazy, hungry dwarves tearing each other to shreds.
I bet you can make it alot further with a good guide. One thing I got to ask, did you plant those plump helmet spawns, and in every season?
Do we have to start a new game when the new version comes out?
Yeah. Saves from the old versions won't be compatible with the new version since so much will change.
I didn't even know that was possible
Yeah, you can tell world gen to stop at a certain year, or just stop the time passing with the spacebar.
Year 8000 or so worlds are... odd.
Too bad you can't make worlds gen more.
I'd love to gen a year 1 world, mess with it, and then have it gen a couple thousand years.
Yeah. Saves from the old versions won't be compatible with the new version since so much will change.
Crap, is the new version the one you talked about (also in the OP with a huge changelist) coming out in 2 weeks to months like Orkel said?
I just had a fun time.
I had a pretty good fortress, everything was going fine, around 90 dorfs.
Then from nowhere unhappy thoughts started spreading. Very quickly it descended into a tantrum sprial, people going berzerk, goblins...
Within 2 seasons I was down to 4 dwarfs (and a lot of bodies). Only then did they feel happy again.
Then a vile force of darkness arrived.
They killed two straight away and chased a child around for 5 minutes until he fell asleep (permanently).
The last guy was one of my original miners, he proceeded to kill 9 goblins and chased the others away.
I then accidentally made him mine into the magma pipe.
fun
I didn't even know that was possible
You can stop the worldgen early
[editline]f[/editline]
Crap, didn't notice the etxra page
brb getting something postworthy
ok so, why do I have like 30 idlers but nobody willing to haul anything?
[editline]f[/editline]
Ok, so I put wood on like, super urgent with the dwarves last year.
they brought about 6 pieces :saddowns:
I started testing out the hydra this morning and found I couldn't quite hack off its heads with an adamantine two-handed sword. While I was working through the numbers there, I got a crash report which ended up being this horrible intermittent doesn't-happen-with-any-debug-information-enabled beast I've only finished off just now, so I'll be back at the hydra tomorrow! I understand what's happening with the neck severing now so I should be able to get to testing bleeding, KOs, and so on without much trouble.
O.o Are you Orkel?
Yeah, you can tell world gen to stop at a certain year, or just stop the time passing with the spacebar.

This. At year 2, the era is most probably called "Age of *megabeast* (and *another begabeast*)", and if you kill that/those ruling powers you can literally change the name of the era quite easily. You could have one named after your adventurer.
O.o Are you Orkel?
Was playing BC2, plus it doesn't matter if someone else posts it too :v:
[editline]02:57PM[/editline]
Glad to see he's already at hydra testing.
What's that hydra test anyway?
What's that hydra test anyway?
A test to see whether a hydra dies or survives when one of its heads is cut off. In the new version, the hydra is supposed to survive it, but in the current version a hydra dies when it happens, which is wrong. The game doesn't recognize the hydra as having several heads and automatically kills it when one is cut off. That's what he is fixing for DF 2010 and checking out with the hydra test.
God damn it, I just opened up Dwarf Fortress to continue my old save but then I remembered I got raped by orcs. I tried going back in adventurer but got raped by the hammerorc lord that slayed every single one of my champions.
There's an artifact dog leather buckler with an iron spike in the middle of it in there. :saddowns:
