While I agree it isn't necessarily warez, there's only a slim chance that he got it from a retailer that has broken the street date. The PC version is obviously locked like the steam release and I believe the PS3 release is locked like that, perhaps the xbox release is not.

Well we are nearing the end of a long weekend of indie games. Portal 2 will be released soon and many will be avoiding this area until they have finished the game ingleplayer and all. Seems like we have waited forever and yet it is right in front of us.
Hell yeah, I couldn't have picked a better day to contract a bad sinus infection.

I don't think so. Cause then if someone buys the game for the first time, and gets steam for only Portal 2, he won't be able to play co-op with any of them.
It's probably gonna be both. You can create a private session for someone you invite, or just make it public and wait for someone.
