So I managed to get my first set of habitat modules into orbit with my solar array, which also has a command pod to control the stations thrusters and modules. Only now, I just realized, I've never docked anything before and this is the first time I've gotten anywhere near my target with plenty of fuel to spare. But I can't seem to keep it in steady and slow control, I really don't want to collide and I need to come in straight.

Oh god..
You do have RCS modules and an RCS tank on there, right...right?
Spaceport down for anyone else?

Nope just unbelievable slow for some reason..

Right!

Hopefully, if everything connects. I'll be able to start populating my capsules. The first 3 prime real estate pods in the middle will be Bill, Jeb, and Bob clones. Then I'll fill in the outer 2 capsules will red shirts for further missions.

Just get into a position where your ports are directly facing each other, then nudge it forwards very slightly
Are you using docking mode?

docking mode is useful

Align your ship so that its facing straight on to your intended target docking port (right clicking ont he port and setting it as a target can also help) then use the RCS keys to move up/down/side to side then use the forward or backwards controls to move closer (and then slow down when you're closer) going into precision control mode should help too.
I'm glad you have plenty of RCS fuel though
Nothing is quite as stressful as docking without it
Oh my god the satisfaction, that dopamine release!

All without mods, I am a space wizard. For my first ever docking not too shabby.
How helpful is the docking mode really? I've never actually used except to stop my rovers from tipping over while driving.

It's great to keep you from slamming into your station, I used it to go .1m/s to dock so it's very important. So now that I have everything from housing to power on the station, what should I do next?

That 6 way docker so close to those solars scares me. Maybe you should flip that section around.
Add some gas tanks to refuel vehicles!

Flip that thing around, that six way dock is extremely risky
Launch some big damn fuel/RCS/Xenon tank supplies up there to refuel and prepare interplanetary/deep space missions, maybe some engines/small shuttles to have as "escape pods" too
I could probably flip it around, I'm probably going to suffer a heart attack in the process, but it would be worth it. I guess I'll go from there. Should I live stream this? because I can.
Here we go I'm doing it anyway.

I'd watch it.
How is the lag on that thing?

Wow nice job COMPLETELY decoupling the 6 coupler thinger from BOTH ENDS

That's a few million dollars that space program will never see again.

Not if he uses quick save / load
Looks like he's just trying to not use the 6 thinger now
[editline]10th April 2013[/editline]
Or he's trying to save it idk
Can't wait for him to run out of RCS
I'd say at this point you're better off just docking the big part on station and then launching up a space tugger and retrieving the node. Then you can place it on a free spot, remove the big part again, place the node with the tugger, dock the tugger, and then attach the big part again. There's no way you're going to be able to chase down that node.

wouldn't it be easier to just ship a new node with the tugger
I thought about that after I posted. I suppose you could, but it's extra weight. While it would make it easier you would still have the now potentially hazardous node floating around near the station. Either way it would be best to retrieve it at the very least for safety.
Everything is still relatively close. I'm going to make a repair module that I'll send up to shuttle everything together and get it repaired.
Facepunch, ruining space stations one stream at a time
:(
I wanted to attach my first stage engines separately than my second stage ones, but I only had access to an incline...

This design had some.. minor issues with angular acceleration however

In the end, I attached some small rockets to the outside facing horizontally, and had them bound to my '1' key.
The resulting ship is actually quite powerful, if you take care to keep it from spinning out of control.
Here is my Minmus refuel station with mk1, 2, and 3 miners on it. All tanks full.

Unfortunately, the station is quite laggy. Anyone know how bad quantum struts are on the game engine as I used a LOT of them as you can see lol, so that would be my guess for bad frame rate. If that's the case, I may remake how the main fuel tanks are attached (or I may just do that anyways).
man, once I get some money I really want to buy this. I'm just afraid it'll turn into another minecraft.

Turn into another minecraft how?
Turn into another minecraft how?
It'll get completed for the most part, have a bunch of good mods, and then slow down in development.
i don't think ksp is comparable to minecraft in development

yeah, squad just keeps consistently putting out amazing updates with no sign of slowing down
