Q: What type of math do you need to learn for C++?
Algebra's all you need for a good start. The rest should come naturally.
I fucking love you for making portal possible.
No homo.
Also, I was wondering if you could help me with a problem in portal, PM me if you can please.
PersonGuy, did Gabe ever yell at you?
What areas do Valve actually hire for? I know there's programming, modelling and all the basic stuff, but what else do they look for?

Immediate openings are available in the areas of:
materials handling, and low clearance security. Please contact Valve personnel for further information.
How do you get hired by valve, either through invitation or filling a form and stuff like that.
Was there one person in particular who coded the whole portal system in source, did it take long to get from a working version until you were happy with how it felt, acted etc
Dave, Garret, and I all work on it through the entire development. Dave did most of that work, handling rendering, lighting, physics issues, and random player view fixups. I did portal placement rules, player movement and orientation through portals, turret lasers/ai/bullets/ropes through portals, audio through portals, and patching up other random bugs. Garret did energy balls through portals, PVS (visibility) through portals, and some other stuff. There's probably tons of stuff I'm forgetting, but the point is that there was a crazy amount to do and the original team split it up.
I have a question too actually: Have you ever done any "bad" things at Valve that everyone has hated/gotten angry at you for?
Yeah, I made a completely retarded code change once to fix a Portal bug where you could cause storage cubes to float in mid air by balancing them on your head. This caused TF2 to crash when players fell on top of each other and the playtest for that day was hosed. Very dumb, but I reverted it and solved the problem in a much better way.
1. Where do you get these wacky, crazy, and altogether awesome ideas for games, in game items, etc?
Lack of sleep can put me in a weird state where bad ideas come flooding out... and sometimes there's a good one mixed in there. Actually having an awesome idea isn't hard... it's deciding which awesome idea to use to solve any given problem that's hard. I just carry around ideas like a problem solving toolbox.
2. I code, and I've noticed that while coding a semi-large chunk that it's easy to get disheartened, lose interest, or get headaches. How does a valve coder keep himself mentally alert, focused, and encouraged?
I set smaller goals within that large chunk so there's something worth celebrating at each step.
Q: What type of math do you need to learn for C++?
Algebra. For gameplay/graphics programming, Linear Algebra and Geometry are important. For physics programming, Calculus is important.
Q: You mentioned you played ICO being one of your favorite games, did you ever play Shadow of the Colossus? If not, you need to find the time to play it.
Q: Am I failure if I never played ICO? :D

Hehe, that'd be quite nice :P
