Personally I think it's one of the best skin's in the game. Top 15 easily.

My friend just hit level 20 and he has like 18000. I'm pretty sure the only two things he's bought is Ashe and Tryndamere.
is a seven orb ult even possible? I've been playing syndra a bunch since yesterday (hot damn she's fun) and I can consistently do six orbs (Q, Q, W first Q, Q, W, R) but I have no idea how you'd have time for seven.
Also, since her ult leaves a buttload of orbs in a general area, it seems smarter to ult before using E, so you can hit them with the E after to do much more damage (six orb E is painful) and just about guarantee a stun. Yes/no?
Also how do you feel about wota/spec wraith on her

Yeah, it is.
Q twice, W the first orb and Q twice more. W the first one down on the ground and ult. You will need 40% CDR, obviously.

i like her a lot but i feel like her combos need much more setup for the same result as other ap carries

yeah she needs a bit of QoL changes. takes a lot more effort than other AP carries, but of course it's super satisfying when you build up a great combo and nuke some poor sod
she can bully a lot of mids effectively too

Indeed they do. That's one of the reasons why she isn't played quite as much as other, simpler and quicker AP carries.
Besides, you'll always want atleast 20% CDR on Syndra. It'll provide a lot of extra Ult damage without too much trouble.
If you have 40% CDR and a Deathfire Grasp you'll be able to destroy anything but tanks with one ult.

I played against one mid and got roflstomped because of how long range her Q was.

yeah my buddy plays her a lot mid for that reason, but his teamfight presence isn't really amazing as her. I dunno if it's really him or just Syndra by nature but he can snipe people with her Q. he only really has trouble with people like Kass and Talon, but... y'know... antimages...
well i mean just because she's a bit harder doesn't mean she's any less viable. it just means i need to get really goddamn good with her before i use her in ranked or something.

Her AOE effectiveness could be massive if aimed right though.

I played a game as Nocturne jungler yesterday. There was a Vayne on my team that kept pushing, barely had CS, but whined about me not ganking.
Then I noticed his late/mid game build. Berserker's greaves, okay, that's not so bad. Bloodthirster? Okay, makes sense. Black Cleaver? Wait what you're Vayne, you don't give a shit about armour because you have true damage on your W. That was all he had. When the round ended he had an IE, BC, BT and berserker's greaves.
He ended 1/9/7, or something like that. Those people make me suicidal.

I even told him that BC doesn't give AS and he just said :"BC is OP"
