Attachment to fictional characters - Is it normal?
So I was playing CODWAW the other night, and I played through the entirety of the campaign in about eight hours. Now, as all good stories go, certain major characters died. I expected this.
What I did not expect was such an emotional reaction to their passing.
If you haven't played CODWAW and don't want the story revealed, the rest is in spoiler tags.
[sp]So at the final portion of the final American mission, Roebuck or Polansky will die, depending on your actions. I saved Polansky, not knowing this, and Roebuck died. I just stood over his corpse for a full 15 seconds, completely stunned. I watch the ending American cutscene, and almost cry as Polansky hands me Roebuck's dogtags. I later went through again and saved Roebuck, because I like him better. (He was voiced by Keifer Sutherland, the guy who plays Jack Bauer in 24.)
I play the final Soviet missions, and in the 2nd to last one dies, Pvt. Chernov dies via flamethrower-wielding Nazi. Once again, I'm stunned, and just stare as he takes his last breaths. Sgt. Reznov takes his diary, which he berated Chernov for writing earlier, saying that nobody would read it, and says "Somebody... should read this.". At the end, Reznov gives an inspiring, but short speech, and I just want to say to him "I agree completely!".[/sp]
Anyways, I also get attached to awesome characters who don't die, such as Sgt. Reznov, or Alyx Vance, or even minor characters such as Griggs and Sheckley.
My question is, is this normal? Is anyone else like this?
World at War was such a terrible game. I couldn't even remember the names of the main chracters, 'cept some guy called Roebuck (And that's only because I know someone with that last name in real life)
When people died it just seemed cliché'd to me.
Half-life 2, however, oh ho ho ho. That was a whole different boat!

all of mgs3 (because it's the best, game, evaaaar) make me all emotional.
A-fucking-gree!
[sp]jenny from the darkness when uncle paulie and eddie schrote kill her[/sp] ;-;
this.
[sp]I was stunned when Kain killed that female vampire in Blood Omen 2.
Stunned by Kain's brutality, not by the fact that she died.[/sp]
Then I forgot about it.
[sp]When your dad dies in Fallout 3, cried. [/sp]
I know a kid who said he fell in love with Goldie from Animal Crossing: Wild World. He's like 16 now, and was like 12 or something when it happened. Is that what you mean?
When dad [sp]dies[/sp] in fallout 3. I just got pissed and sad at the same time
I made sure i rescued all the the men in that misson in WaW where you are In the Boat plane. the ones that swim over to your plane and beg for help to be pulled in. damn Waw is one of the only games to make me feel really emotional over a game.
Oh wow. I found it impossible to feel sad for characters in WaW dying. Not attached at all. CoD4 was way different...
I didn't save any of the people begging to get in :)

Heartless :)
I think the bit in Cod 4 that nearly made me cry was when you have to save that lady in the crashed heli, i dunno why. but it was just her voice and the stuff that was going on around that must of done it.
I'm not heartless, I just can't get attached to screaming yelling idiots.
The end of Modern Warfare made me sad (along with the nuke), nothing in WaW affected me in the least.

Yeah i Agree on that one, i hope number 2 is gonna be as good
[sp]Jenny from The Darkness when Uncle Paulie and Eddie Schrote kill her[/sp] ;-;
That part was hardcore.
Eli vance dieing made me sad. I hope they salvage his leg and tuned it into a anti-combine gun.
Also, GLaDOS's death made me sad some reason.
In the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion, I really didn't want to kill Antoinetta Marie...
i feel bad in RTS games when my infantry get killed
i also feel bad for minor npc soldier guys that follow me around or just stand around and shoot things that get killed in terrible, painful ways :ohdear:
This. I rarely care about plot characters, but I AM NOT LEAVING THAT GENERIC RIFLEMAN BEHIND.
Frank West
And Some of the Dead rising people
STALKER. I got attached to a DUTYer in Yantar, running AMK mod. He was kind of like a local trader- he had shitloads of weapons on him, and would sell them to the DUTYers around him. I spent many a day picking of mindless, wandering zombies with him. Then one day, I arrive back at the bunker and something is wrong- there are no DUTYers. I find them all dead inside the compound, along with one dead Chimera. I'm assuming it was an electro-chimera and they were all within it's death-blast range when it went off. God bless that man.
Every Carmine in Gears of War.
I feel fucking horrible when I kill people in games like GTA IV. I always think about how their families will feel :ohdear:
Same here, but I can happily kick the fuck out of that religious speaker guy who preaches outside your house you get in Bohan.
House of the dead where G or someone dies i hated that part :ohdear:

Fuck spoiler tags :<
AW, that was the one I was trying to remember.
Umm... spoiler tags, please?
[sp] He never dies. If you've played the game, you would have (hopefully) noticed a little cutscene at the end where you learn Snake survives the bullet (by some miracle). Go watch it on youtube or, better yet, go play the game if you can.[/sp]
No, [sp]He just pulls it out before firing[/sp]
Mass Effect. The Decision. That one.
The characters were so human, it was hard to leave one behind. And that decision is the worst I ever had to make. it haunted me for a while. Fuck you, Bioware, for making such a fucking sad moment.
So yeah, I think it's normal to feel attachment when the characters are actual humans with feelings and strong personality.
Yeah, I shat bricks when I almost had to get rid of Wrex.
Luckily my charm was high enough.
Of course were supposed to feel an attachment to characters in games or books, its what makes them sell.
i was so sad when Rhyse died in turok!!! for some reason i always get attached to the sniper:P
Fuck no, it's not normal, each time i watch an ending video with a character dieing they all go "OMUGOD PUR RUMAN :((((((((("

You have no heart.
Usually the more apparently generic the character, the more I care about them.
As in, infantry in RTS's, or otherwise unique, but non-story NPC's in RPG's.
Characters whose deaths made me feel sad:
Halo 3 - [sp]Sgt. Johnson[/sp]
Mass Effect - [sp]Wrex[/sp]
Call of Duty 4 - [sp]Pretty much every main character[/sp]
Saint's Row 2 - [sp]Carlos[/sp]
Gears of War 2 - [sp]Carmine[/sp]
Shadow of the Colossus - [sp]Agro, even though it's revealed later that he lives[/sp]
