It's referred to as the Gauss Gun in HL1, it was only later referred to as the Tau Cannon in HL2. The names are synonymous.
It was labeled originally going to be a coilgun, as evidenced by the games files (w_gauss.mdl for example), but was later changed to a tau cannon. The games files were not changed with it, but in HLDM and HL2 it is referred to as the Tau Cannon. People looking over HL1's files started calling it the Gauss Gun because that's what it was listed as (It's also why the Gluon Gun is sometimes called the Egon Gun, and how Gman got his unofficial name). Tau Cannon is the correct term, but Gauss Gun is still a popular name for it.
I believe Egon was reference to Ghost Busters
Not kept up with this so probably has been mentioned, but when is it getting completed?
In the future
According to Flatline, probably before HL3.
Guys, I think that the Black Mesa Source team forgot that there are 4 chapters after Lambda Core :v:
edit
Joking.. I know the BM:S team is doing their best on finishing some stuff up. We are lucky to play a pre-release. I'm gonna wait though :P
Yeeeah, 4 chapters
Who counts Endgame as a chapter?
Me. The Half Life wiki. The Black Mesa wiki. A lot of people.
Who counts it as a part of Nihilanth?
I just think the Gauss Cannon is a better name, btu I didn't know it was called the Tau Cannon in HL2 until recently.
[sp]Fun fact, when I first got the Gauss Cannon, I thought it was a beta Gravity Gun.[/sp]

I don't count it as either, I count it as the endgame..
Well if it helps AT ALL, the Black Mesa Dev Wiki calls it a chapter. So it's a chapter in Black Mesa, like it or not
Yeeeah, 4 chapters
OHDAMN I forgot that sneaky GMan episode. Much like Black Mesa Inbound, I keep forgetting that it is a separate chapter :P

It's called the 'Tau' cannon according to the resource files. Just like the .357 was called 'Python', the Gluon Gun was called 'EGON'.
Fun facts:
-The Gauss Cannon shoots 'Tauons', which are (in quantum science) particles that represent a certain type of interaction/energy.
-The Gluon Gun was referred to as the "Quantum Destabilizer" by a scientist in Lambda Core in the original Half-Life. It works by shredding (de-stabilizing) matter particles by tampering with the Gluons, which hold Quarks together (again, according to quantum science).
That's why I like the Gluon Gun in Black Mesa, I feel like I'm tearing them apart cell by cell, especially how they gib and vapourise.
If what I've read is correct, the Tau Cannon should have a range of less than 0.1 millimeters
I think that the chapter division was just put in place to kind of add a clear line between the major plot events that happen at Xen.
Xen- Gordon arrives to xen
Gonarch's Lair- Gordon kills the headcrab queen.
Interloper- Gordon really pisses off Xen creatures.
nihilanth- Gordon kills plot significant huge floating alien baby.
Endgame- Gordon gets lectured by the gman for killing plot significant huge floating alien baby.
No offense, but I don't see anything amazingly different.
The default revolver is more realistic, even if it doesn't look "right."

While I loved BM's throwing animation for this one, I hated the detonator animations, because it looked so unnatural the way he held it. I like this one.
i gotta say the hivehand was the thing that impressed me the most, its design is fantastic and feels a lot better than the original
Not to mention the alien anal fisting.

That was the best part of the mod.
I love the Security Guard's reaction to it.

Wait what? When?
Wait what? When?
you need to some how delay picking up the hive hand until you encounter the next security guard.

You can hit the switch before picking up the Hivehand. Then the Security Guard that you (hopefully) save down there can be led back to the elevator, where you can then pick it up.
