How does it work?

Now all we need is for chests to automatically pick up all items touching it, and you've got yourself a fully automated factory. Also, I heard rumours about huge ice caves somewhere. How do you find them?

Alright, the chest had some ingots and a saddle in it, but a lone spider keeps spawning next to the cage every time I go in there.
