Yeah, they should be.
Just use a boat, and search on sandy coastlines.
Im so mad right now, I lost a save file with 15+ hours into it. Love the game, but Notch seriously needs to rethink the save system for single player (/game). Now if I try to respawn, the FPS drops to 2

As long as you didn't delete it it should be recoverable. Open it in NBTEdit and set the player's health to 20, the deathtime to 0.

Damn, casting cobblestone buildings with lava is possible, but you cant have it be perfect, you have to do some manually. when filling in things in order for it to not make it harden above, you must wait for it to get to a certain level after you removed the lava spawn
Its not really practical, as if you have the ability to get lava you might as well just cast obsidian.
