Yep. He said that he would drop an apple when he died, which would heal 2 hearts, but you could make it a golden apple when surrounded by gold bars, which would restore 8 hearts.

Wow, Notch is really good at griefing... would be awesome to suddenly see him in your server. Then he suddenly goes around summoning wool everywhere with his magic hoe. Would give you a perfectly good reason to kill him in order to get an apple.
