Ah compulsory buying as a kid. I remember those days. I thing the last time I bought something impulsively was Forza 2.
Screw the game store, who remembers their fun time with browser games? Runescape, Neopets, Miniclip.com, Armor Games, Newgrounds (which, oddly enough, I found out about from Neopets), all that stuff. It was like a kid in not just the candy shop, but a candy warehouse!
Heli attack 3 mothafucka!
OP is true. I used to buy PS1 games and go nuts with them. Now whenever I get a game, I get bored of it after a while in the first day. It just isn't that big of a deal, and trailers always look SOO much better then they really are.

i never had any fun with this,it was always a grindfest
and 90% of the content is only for premium members, which sucks balls

I wonder if anyone remembers the old "flashplayer.com" that's now some dumb ass website called "ugoplayer.com" or something.
That website was the reason I never got my homework done in middle school :v:
I've become very pessimistic when it comes to game, adopting the "It sucks until proven otherwise". Whenever I see a developer presenting a game, I don't really get excited anymore, instead I think "Yeah like if that will work", "Sure everything works fine and looks great when you've staged it" and so on. This goes for nearly everything, from photorealistic graphics (which turn out to be nothing special outside of developer-released media) to complete destructability.
Nowadays I only get excited for games that:
- Follow a tried and true formula (like Starcraft 2, Men of War Assault Squad and Dead Rising 2)
- Doesn't show only a tech demo of a feature, instead shows the feature in the game working off-stage (like when the press gets to try it). This depends a lot on my personal instinct though, I've seen so many E3s and expos that my bullshit sense has evolved enough.
I remember this, and agree. I used to buy a game, expecting it to be awesome, and it was usually more awesome than I thought it would be because my standards were so low. Nowdays I've seen so many games even if I haven't played them, and my standards are set so high. The only games lately I've actually been surprised by has been M&B: Warband and Starcraft 2, I was really excited about both of those and when I got them they were even better than I thought. I would also say Bad Company 2 but I expected a little too much and was slightly disappointed.
i do miss that time where graphic whores didn't exist
you know, the type of idiot that thinks a game sucks if it doesn't look like Crysis
how many times i heard someone saying he didn't even try Y game because it looked old, even though it's a classic game, for example Doom
Way back in the day, a copy of a game or game aspect was "Oh wow! Cool! I loved it last time, I'll love it now."

Now, it's a pile of: "Pff, this is just another rip-off I hate it, brb uninstalling."

They have always existed, remember the bit-wars? PCs have always had a lot less of them, but they have always existed on PC too.
Of course lately they have got much worse, with the MW2-kids and stuff.
Ah, the wonders of childhood innocence.
It's like you didn't really care what other outside sources said about the game, you just liked it because you did.
But now it's just 'If X isn't good then I won't buy it".
It's not just the money grabbing companies, it's the standards we put on games now, we talk about the "good days" where we played games for the hell of it.
Sometimes we compare those factors to a new game that was just announced, and judge whether we should buy it or not.
We may just be nostalgia guided or games back then were really that good.
But our newer generation will just repeat the same things we did when we were younger, it's a never ending process.
-snip-
I'm affected too much by people and reviews now. I totally avoided MW2 because members on this forum were completely bombing it. Then I borrowed it from my brother who was determined to make me play it and I absolutely loved it.
I constantly go into Game stores these days with the intent of just buying a game I think looks fun but 65% of the time leave with nothing because I've consistently asked myself "Will this last me after I finish it? Will I ever actually play it again?".

seriously, where do you guys get those?
For some reason, i keep playing games that keep getting better and better, yet my standarts never rise. (And they are pretty damn low standarts too.) And i still go around and pick up games based on their covers. (That's one of the reasons Persona 4 made my brain explode, because when i picked it up i had no idea of what to expect except "a good RPG".)
So, i didn't lost my "innocence" yet, and i hope i never will.
I've recently been purchasing games that I've heard of, or wanted but never had the chance to get, and one benefit it that they're super cheap, but another is that I had a lot of games I've wanted since I was younger. I've also been revisiting old titles I totally sucked at (ICO, Dark Cloud) and found out that I can actually beat the first level now when back when I was 7-8 I fumbled around cursing the complexity of a simple key.
Honestly I don't share the OP's feelings, and I've been a gamer my whole life almost, not counting the first handful. I guess because I don't notice the lack of games I dislike because I have enough that I do, and I don't usually play games for a week and abandon them, I've still to this day revisit the old Grand Theft Auto games, including 4, which I've had since the launch day. I guess I don't bore easily.

so I take it you're still 11
Online fps games and forums is where that really stopped for me. You'd have a bunch of people going "THAT GAME SUCKS OH MY GOD YOU'RE A FAG" and you'd start to question it, then you get into reading reviews/watching gameplay/etc, and when you get a game there's not the big thrill anymore unless it's something you were dying to get.
so I take it you're still 11
16 here.
Still have a lot of my life to live(hopefully), so yeah, maybe I still have to lose that.
I will still go out and buy games based on their cover though. Got some really nice ones (Resonance of Fate, Civilization Revolution) using this method.
I remember the days I actually played "demos" haha.
I don't miss being naive it means i save more pennies!
I remember the days I actually played "demos" haha.
Oh man, I used to play Demo Discs almost religiously. Any time a new issue of Playstation Magazine came out, I would immediately tear out the demo disc and maybe take a look at an article or two. I still have most of them, too.

I remember when you always got a demo to try.
Now no one cares for demos, and expect us to trust their pre rendered trailers and "gameplay videos" that arn't even gameplays.

:sigh:, those were the days.
Congratulations, you've grown up. In about 5~8 years you'll be completely bored of video games, and your computer will start to collect dust as slowly you stop bothering with it. Until finally selling it/never booting it up for anything but a quick look at wikipadia, google or youtube.
Because to be honest, the more you age the more you responsibility falls on you and the more you think how video games contribute fuckall to your life.
Don't worry, Facepunch. There is truth in what this man says, but not all of you will stop playing computer games entirely.
I'll be 30 years old next month, and while games aren't as important to me as they used to be, I was still so excited about Red Dead Redemption that I couldn't sleep the night before release day.

Oh god, me too! Used to buy those magazines every single month back when I was playing PS2 games.
This cynisism seems to do me fine, I am rarely disappointed by games, and those that do are the ones I impulse-bought (spore). I download the demos whenever I can too.
Being a discerning buyer is hardly a curse.
All of Melnek's posts are negative and cynical so I stopped reading them really
I miss this too. I remember seeing a commercial for a game then going to the store only to press my face to the glass and hope to get a copy.
I used to love just jumping around the videogames in the store. Then pick something and enjoy the game, sometimes you had some great games. I tend to do it sometimes, but that are these very cheap games from Green Paper.
Bye guys, I'm going to NeverLand. :buddy:
