He'd still have to release an update that changed the password. Nobody'd have to redownload anything but we would be able to tell when the password is reset because of a seemingly random client update.

It autodownloads when you start it up. If you disconnect the internet then you cant play multiplayer.

No. It's in the client. I disconnected my laptop from the internet, opened minecraft. It said Play Offline or Quit? I chose Play Offline, went to the multiplayer button, because it *did* show up, and typed in the password.
