Yes but large and medium slimes will kill you but little slimes will just jump towards you and block your movement.

I did that for my first tower, placing around a thousand wood blocks takes a VERY long time.

I thought about why we don't have flood gates yet.
It all has to do with the doors we already have, and why they have windows on them. The reason they have windows, is so that Notch didn't have to add any additional coding that makes light go through the doorway when it's open and not go through when it's closed. So instead of doing that coding, he added a window.
So floodgates are going to take a while, because Notch has to create 2 things, 'A', lighting going through it only when it's open. 'B', water going through it, which I imagine, is going to be the hardest one to make, but if he can figure out the code, it will probably pave the way for grates too.

I think the best way to have floodgates is that it simply adds another block next to it when activated, and when you break either block you just get 1 floodgate back.
