No. What happened was that you generated that chunk at night, so mushrooms, only growing in darkness, were spawned there. Then, when the sun came out, it killed them.

I hope Notch adds trains, like real trains that require coal to operate and an engineer and it could hold many passengers and take them to their destinations

Agree. Trains can really be minecarts with a furnace on the first one, and notch already confirmed linking things together in Minecast, so we are set with that.
