I see your problem. You're running Vista. Sadly, this isn't a joke. I have a computer in my house with better specs than what I play minecraft on running Vista and I crash like that most of the time. If it does start, it gets like 1fps. My crappy XP computer runs just fine for some odd reason.

It's rather common. I find it everywhere. At least, on a new save anyway. Just check sand near water.
