You should be able to take the goop slimes drop, make a 3x3 of it to make a slime block, then you could like use 8 slime blocks with a single diamond in the middle to make a giant friendly slime that would follow you around and protect you. He would be orange and would be a bit stronger than a normal slime.
Maybe you could also throw the goop at the friendly slime with Q to heal it.

I've never experienced any crashes or serious bugs like that with either of them.

Java is the same between Operating Systems in the same way that flash and Html are, even though the rendering needs optimization on non-windows platforms from what I hear, You're either just really unlucky, have a bad HDD, or some other obscure thing.
