I do NOT get this hype over Smile.jpg... Or creepypasta's in general. They are a good read, but actually being SCARED of them? Reminds me of my friend who freaked out at the FBI warning for SAW because he though't it meant people actually thought about LITERALLY recreating the movie.

On my main save, I entered a mine and made stairs all the way to the bottom and hit the lava level. I didn't feel like the cave was too deep, so I went a bit farther down, and I started hitting that adminium/whatever/unbreakable block. It was weird because on my other saves, I had spent much longer making the tunnel to the same elevation. Does the water level vary between maps?

There's your problem. I'm pretty sure it said somewhere on the site to be sure to use Sun JDK, as some other ones aren't stable enough to support Minecraft properly. Try using Sun's official Linux JDK and see if that improves anything. That was the same problem my friend's computer had, and that fixed it for the most part.
