did you read the article you dumb fuck? here: According to an e-mail response sent to users from Valve President Gabe Newell, and later confirmed to IGN, the company's anti-cheating software built into its Steam service randomly began banning undeserving players over the past two weeks. "The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version," said Newell. "This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game." Along with an apology, Valve has also given those affected a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 along with an extra copy to give to a friend.
I appreciate for posting this. The fucking page doesn't load, I didn't mention it.
My friend is still banned, even when he did not do anything and vac randomly banned him.
I should get a free copy of L4D2 for wasting my money on L4D.
Imagine the typical MW2 player in L4D2. :derp::derp: :derp::derp:
I'm okay with this.
Everyone seems to be making a big deal out of nothing. Those who were banned weren't able to access their online games on VAC secure servers as they had been banned. If your account was banned imagine how pissed off and upset you would be, I know I would be due to the amount I have spent over the year on my account. Valve gave those who were banned Left 4 Dead 2 as it's a fun game with your friends, hence they got two copies. Secondly it shows that Valve listens to people and is willing to admit that they made a mistake and reimburse people to say sorry for the mistake and the inconvenience, no harm done and here's a gift to say we are sorry. Thirdly it shows what a massive empire valve are as they can give away so many games and then there's also the fact that more and more games are using Steamworks, Valve wouldn't want game developers to not use Steam and VAC if they were uncertain about how safe it was and what measures would be taken if a mistake was made. I preordered Left 4 Dead 2 when it came out, I paid full price and I would do again, I don't understand why people are winging and whining as they didn't get banned and get a free game. As others have said people only wanted to be banned for a free game.
I should get a free copy of L4D2 for wasting my money on L4D.
This. Edit: Nice automerge, I think I'll break it.
They didn't deserve free copies of L4D2 and nobody asking for them in this thread deserves one. VAC fucked up. All VALVe has to do is say "whoops looks like our system wasn't so great", unban them, and apologize.
This would not have been sufficient for the "average gamer" who spent an "agonizing" two weeks away from the "best multiplayer fps since halo." If they didn't want a shitstorm, they needed to provide ample compensation.
With 12k+ people being given 2 free copies of l4d2, they might as well sell it for free to everyone.
nobody has gifted me l4d2 yet
They didn't deserve free copies of L4D2 and nobody asking for them in this thread deserves one. VAC fucked up. All VALVe has to do is say "whoops looks like our system wasn't so great", unban them, and apologize. They don't have to throw in TWO COPIES of an around-30 dollar game for free. Before everyone goes "OOOH IT'S VALVE YOU HATE VALVE GET THE FUCK OUT", look at my avatar and then reconsider. The only reason they were given free copies of L4D2 is because MW2 is known for having the worst and most childish fanbase of any game on Steam save for maybe TF2. They JUST WOULDN'T LET VALVE GO if they didn't throw in some 'compensation'. VALVe didn't have to do shit for them, but they did anyway. They should have just said "no we won't give you a free game" and put those undeserving 13 year olds in their place.
...Or maybe they just want to actually do something good and makes amends for their mistake? Just because we have shitty companies like EA and Activision doesn't mean that every company is evil and money-grabbing.
Thank you, steam. :golfclap:
Waay, i woke up this morning with a steam news box open, clicked it and it said i have a free copy of L4D2 in my guest pass things, i thought, strange, then check my Junk email and found this : " Hello, Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you. The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks). We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn't already own the game. To share your extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with a friend, you can 'Manage Gifts and Guest Passes' from the 'Games' Menu in Steam, or visit this article on the Steam Support site for detailed instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4502-TPJL-2656. To access your own copy of Left 4 Dead 2, visit your library of games in Steam. If you didn't already own the game, it will now be listed among your others there, and is available for download immediately. NO the gift is mine! :gonk:
you would gain the money back you spent.
No you wouldn't. You'd gain the value of your money spent back, but at the end of the day, you still would have shelled out $60 for a crappy game.
Most of the people complaining bought L4D2 and paid for it. :colbert: they got banned for two weeks at the most, it's not like they died
I bought L4D2 for the full price, and I've bought lots of gifts for others over my two years on steam. I'm telling you to shut the fuck up and get out.
Wow, that's truly great of VALVe. Unlike many others in this thread, I don't want a copy of L4D2. Got mine for free anyway. :smug:
Most of the people complaining bought L4D2 and paid for it. :colbert: they got banned for two weeks at the most, it's not like they died
I bought L4D2 and don't give a shit. It doesn't affect me, it doesn't affect you. The people who were given the game were unlikely to buy it, and receiving this gives Valve an opportunity to spread its name to a new userbase. It's good business practice and honestly giving something to the community after you've fucked something up as an apology (no matter how shallow) shows an actual care for your users unsurpassed by any gaming company on the market. Wrongfully losing access to a game you've purchased is annoying as fuck. It'd honestly be enough to make me not purchase another product from that developer. To have that dev essentially come up and say "Hey, sorry, I fucked up" and then give me a token of apology to assuade me shows humbleness. They could've been like Blizzard and played themselves off as great people, infallible, and made it seem as if VAC was doing its job. Instead, they admitted their mistake. I honestly don't know what you're bitching about. So what, someone got something for free. If anything, given your "love for valve" as you show in your avatar, something like this should simply affirm you in your love for the company. <- Still willing to buy someones extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2. <- Steam account. [editline]10:26AM[/editline] Twice Posted somehow
Valve is awesome because they can admit mistakes, some other companies would insist the players were cheating.
Fuck yes, I wonder if I'm unbanned. [editline]09:12AM[/editline] Go and use your mommy and daddy's credit card. [editline]09:14AM[/editline] Wait, this is bad, all the MW2 kiddies that got banned will be on L4D2, fuck.
Posting here because I'd be interested in getting a copy of L4D2 if anyone has a giftable code to give away with no one to really send it to (steam linky under my avatar)
Valve only did this to boost l4d2 playtime, because of die hard MW2 kiddies. smart, but not smart enough valve :smug:
Funny thing is, giving over 12k players 2 free copies of l4d2 they lost 725 078$ Goes to show how much valve loves their community.
They will lose nothing. It costs nothing to give away a copy of the game. They just don't earn anything from it.
At least all the MW2 gamers have a good game to play now.
