There's a tweak you can do that can unlock the supertextures, but I'm happy keeping my game at 60fps
Lock the framerate at 120 and lock fraps at 60. [editline]16th October 2011[/editline] Upsampling will do jack shit to unblur the textures, in fact, it will do the opposite. They'll simply be less blurry than they are now, from a certain distance.
Because you're smarter than Carmack.
Why does recording make my fps drop terribly? I get capped off at 60 frames and it still drops to 30. RAGE does not feel the same once you go from 60 to 30.
Can anyone help?
Record to a different drive than the game runs on. Normally I say that trick is bullshit because if you have enough ram it's not an issue. But specifically with rage it is constantly reading textures from the harddrive, so swapping to another drive can speed things up.

Just made a wallpaper kinda thing, the high-end config is pretty sweet.

is there a way to enable smart vsync in a cfg? it wont stay enabled using ingame menu and using either the standard vsync command or forcing it with CCC results in stuttering
Because you're smarter than Carmack.
Has nothing to do with being smarter. The only way to get physically better textures is to have actually better textures, and Bethesda's already stated their opinion on the matter for the moment; so unless they change their mind or they reach a compromise on the original size, this is as good as you're gonna get. They'll simply look better up close than they do now.

Swapinterval = 1

set it to record onto a hard drive other than the one the game is running off, change the recording speed in fraps from 30 to 60fps, and most importantly stop expecting recording games to not affect your performance

no there isn't
the game does have higher res textures available in certain cases but they're still extremely noticeably lowres looking

applying some kind of detail texture will do wonders to make the textures look less flat and distract you from the actual lowres looking textures
I mean think of the logistics of rolling out a patch that doubles the res of the textures for a game where the textures are already something like 15GB
So, I just got Rage for my laptop, and this is the error that I keep receiving:
***************************
GL_ARB_draw_elements_base_vertex not available
***************************
I've tried absolutely EVERYTHING to fix this error. I've downloaded every driver suggested until I was completely updated, I messed with CCC, everything! Does anyone know if there's a fix for this? It crashes immediately on startup and brings up a blue command window with all sorts of information.
I have no idea what they were thinking when they decided to make textures look like they were from the 20th century.

consoles to a lesser extent, but mainly because the megatextures meant that increasing the resolution would mean the game would be on like 500 dvds
ayooo.. Loving my new PC, made this little vignette of subway town.

Figured out how to solve the problem, set CCC from dynamic to fixed.

Then largescale megatextures are a retarded idea.
They should only be used for the background, not the entire game. As of right now the only things that aren't megatextured are weapons, characters and vehicles. Those are the only things that don't look like complete ass up close.

Great, now the game is either freezing incessantly or crashing to desktop every few minutes.
Just a bit into Subway town and I'm on a mission to check out a Authority blockade and go through through some valley with a shitload of unmanned cars shooting pulse cannons at me. I battled them with pop rockets and pulse shots but the only one I've ever seen get taken down was when I shot it and it flipped on to its roof and blew itself up for fucks sake.
How the fuck do I do this?

Looked through the Rage wikia, it ain't got shit.

So youre fighting Authority vehicles.. without a vehicle?
Get a vehicle and use the pulse shots and it's a 1 hit kill, on normal difficulty anyway..

That's the thing, there's no way to get my vehicle in there, as far as I can tell, with those rubble piles designed to make you go somewhere on foot.
[editline]17th October 2011[/editline]
I pretty much definitely missed something though, I'm going to have to double check.
I knew something wasn't right.
You're suppose to shut them down so you can drive through with your car :). Go look for the power supply, put C4 on them.
[editline]17th October 2011[/editline]
In other words, you're suppose to bring your car with you.
Oh wow, I'm just dumb, nevermind.
I checked the barricade and yup, clear path for my car. Probably just too used to missions on foot.

That needs a better thumbnail me thinks.

it's more of a current limitation we have with optical media than anything else, the game would look fantastic if we had the means to store this massive texture practically
it's more of a current limitation we have with optical media than anything else, the game would look fantastic if we had the means to store this massive texture practically
No shit it's a limitation, you can say that about any great tech that game engineers come up with but can't due to current gen limitations, that's why they cut corners and try to work with what we got. Megatextures isn't that big of a genius idea tbh, it's convenient, sure, but that's it. I really hope there's lots of more features in idTech5, it's been a long time.

Ever played something like Oblivion with the highest texture resolution? The tiling of the textures is blatantly obvious absolutely everywhere and it looks pretty terrible. That's what megatextures fix. Every area has a unique texture rather than reusing resources and looking bad.

Tiling textures doesn't mean megatexture is the only solution. You can always rotate or use the textures some way so tiling is barely noticeable. It's really depends on the artists rather than tech, I'm pretty sure a good artist can work wonders. I mean, all games before this didn't use megatextures and they all look decent, some even look great. Maybe in the wake of average 1000mbit internet , megatexture will be the solution, but not now, not with such big size for relatively blurry lowres textures.
Other than that, sure tiling sucks but look at minecraft. Some texture packs look decent even with really low tex size. It's all about artist and design.
The problem is that they don't rotate textures nor stagger them or anything. They stick to a strict grid with everything oriented the same way. Maybe bandwidth and speed-wise (and physical media-wise as well), megatextures aren't a good idea yet but eventually they would be better since every area can be truly uniquely detailed.
Just got RAGE yesterday. While it may have some visual glitches waiting to be fixed, the game runs smooth as butter and is extremely fun so far. (I've gotten to Wellspring)
[editline].[/editline]
Everything loads extremely quick as well.

Exactly my point. If devs don't just copypaste textures around, it would look much better. And yeah, obviously megatexture tech is useful in theory, just not very practical atm.
The most beautiful places don't really seem to benefit from the megatextures at all:
