Oh hi, that's me
:3
Sorry to bump this thread after about a month, but I was wondering if RAGE is worth the $30. Does the PC version still have problems? Is it well optimized? And how long is the game? Is it any good?
I've already looked a few pages back, and I saw mixed opinions. I certainly won't be expecting anything from the ending.

Well, I got it for $5. It was worth that. There are almost no graphical options, it gives you resolution, AA, and a few settings that don't do anything except make the game laggy. This is because the game is supposed to automatically scale the level of detail or something like that to make it so the game will keep a consistent framerate, which it does decently. I would personally like the option to change certain settings myself. The graphics look nice at time, but it's really easy to spot the pixelyness of the textures. The guns are satisfying to use, but they do almost no damage. For enemies with anything resembling armor, the guns take about three full mags to kill, WITH armor piercing bullets. This is why I stopped playing it halfway through. I hate that. I despise it with every fiber of my being. Even the unarmored opponents take way more damage that any human being could conceivably take. The driving parts are kind of slapped on, it doesn't really add to the experience, but neither does it take away from it. You will, however, find yourself needing to spend hard earned (game) money on vehicle upgrades and ammo, rather than on the bullets you'll be using on enemies. The characters are alrite, the story is kind of unimaginative and rushed, and there's really nowhere interesting to explore. Despite being open-world, don't get the impression that you can just run anywhere off the bat and have anything interesting to do. the world is absolutely boring unless you follow the main quest, which will take you everywhere there's anything interesting to do.
Game world - 6/10. Despite the design of the world looking nice and having a great visual style, it's dragged down by bad-looking textures and almost no graphical options. But, if you have a decent computer, the game's graphical scaling software does a pretty good job of keeping the game running smoothly.
Gameplay - 4/10. The reason for this is the FUCKING BULLETSPONGE ENEMIES THAT TAKE TWO FULL MAGS TO KILL WITHOUT ARMOR. Everything else is functional, but really the only interesting aspect of it is the robots you can build, and the wingsticks (which you rarely have enough materials to build anyway). Driving is decently done, but it feels unnecessary and doesn't add to the game much.
UI - 5/10. it's alrite, but it's a bit of a pain to navigate the inventory. It's very unorganized.
Characters - 7/10. The character models are literally the best looking thing in the game, they look amazingly detailed and well done. The animations are great, too, and the voice acting is better than most games I've played. But there really aren't any memorable characters in the game except the cyborg doctor guy.
Overall, I think it would be worth $20 or less, but if you have a slow internet connection, DO NOT BUY THIS ONLINE. IT WILL TAKE AN ENTIRE DAY TO DOWNLOAD THIS AT 1 MB/second. ONLY BUY ONLINE IF YOU HAVE AN EXTREMELY FAST INTERNET CONNECTION, AND ARE BUYING FROM A GOOD DOWNLOAD SOURCE.
Huh. I seem to remember hearing more positive things about it than that.
I liked it as a shooter, but the entire time I was thinking "Half Life 2". The Authority designs almost scream it. I guess it's a good shooter, I'll probably play it again someday.

It's $10 at the moment and I too am curious if it's worth it.

Wow, that's nice. I was considering buying it for $30, but for $10? I'll probably go for it.

Did you get it? I'd likely pick it up if it were $5 but $10 seems too steep.

Yeah, I got it.
Its worth 5 dollars. It was basically mediocre which is not what I should expect from id software.
Wow I feel like I got a totally different experience. I had no technical problems whatsoever when playing; I thought it looked great with everything maxed out.
Animations were solid and environments looked great although not as varied as I would have liked.
The game play was solid and fun (wingsticks were awesome), the loot system was ok and not that bad.
The only thing that wasn't that good was the story and the over world driving.
The story wasn't fleshed out or finished and the driving was OK at best.
I picked this up for 20 bucks and got around 18 hours out of it on steam and I definitely feel like I got my money's worth.
Yeah, I'm actually having quite a bit of fun with it. The shooting is well done, and the driving bits are very exciting. Though the narrative is practically non-existent.
My only problem is that it won't go anywhere over 30 FPS. I have a Radeon HD4870, a 3.0 GHz duo core processor, and 4GB of RAM. Shouldn't that be enough for a better framerate? Or is the FPS capped somehow?

If you have Vsync on, turn it to smart. The default vsync setting (on) caps it to 30 Fps, turning it to "smart" caps it at 60. Or just turn it off and enjoy unlimited fps.

It's been on smart the whole time.
Well then. No idea what the problem is.

It's not a terrible game but it has next to no content and the content it does have is average or slightly above average at times I'd say.
The main story is fairly short and a lot of the time is just taken up traveling and the story is pretty uninteresting. The shooting gameplay is fun and satisfying but there's not nearly enough of it.
Co-op is fun but there's not much of it either and the "competitive multiplayer" might as well be ignored totally.
It's got about the amount of content I would expect from a $15 or $20 game but not much more imo.

That previous guy was wrong, the difference between normal vsync and smart vsync is that smart vsync uses buffering, so basically if it drops below 60fps it'll go down to 30 fps, to keep the sync. I noticed your pc is slightly older, so it may be a good idea for you to turn vsync off, if you can bear the horrible screen tearing.

Actually, I barely notice it in this game. It's kind of hard to tell if I have it on or off. Not that it really affects my performance either way. Kind of makes me wonder if switching it on or off does anything.
Hell, changing any of the settings barely makes the game run any different.
Figured I might as well actually try to play this now that my LIVE expired :(
so far it's not bad. kind of annoying how many shots it takes to kill stuff though. and not being able to lean out of cover is annoying. otherwise it's fun.
Figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to start the discussion back up since the new DLC was released. Is it any good?
pretty silly to have DLC release almost a year after the game came out. And since no one has talked about this for about a year.
If anything I think that means they put some time into it, but I haven't actually played it so I wouldn't know.
I've got a weird as problem with this game, it plays fine then all of a sudden it will just drop to 2 fps and fluctuate between 5 and 40 odd and I have to alt + f4 out, waste of £3
I didn't realise this thread had been bumped. I posted this in the DLC release announcement in the news node:
Since there isn't much discussion here and I am yet to hear anything about the DLC to decided to do a quick search for some reviews. Unsurprisingly I only find 2 from some sites I've never heard of. Better than nothing though.
4/5 - http://www.hiddenaudiolog.com/2012/12/review-rage-scorchers-dlc.html
http://thecontrolleronline.com/2012/12/rage-the-scorchers-dlc-review/
Based on the reviews it sounds like it is okay and for the price it is worthwhile if you're a fan of the original game. The review from hiddenaudiolog states however that the new missions will probably take you only two hours to finish. This doesn't bother me too much as it is kind of what I expected but I could understand why it would turn some people away.
I'm sure this is old information, but I figured I'd share since the new DLC is out.
This makes the game look much better overall while getting rid of texture pop-in.
Make a folder named "id software" in C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\
(This gives filecache000 a place to go, almost entirely removing texture pop-in.)
Then use this CFG maker. Put the new rageconfig CFG in the Rage/base folder.
http://online-source.net/tools/cfg-makers/rage-cfg-maker/
And you're fixed!
Game looks great and runs great.
