4/5 times, I moved it a few inches on accident. 1/5 times, it spontaneously ate my disk. Engineering at its finest.
Have you ever moved your computer while doing something? You know decided "Well I don't quite like where it is right now I'm going to move it 5 inches over, and then proceeded to move it by pickup it up, sliding it etc? No. Don't do it with an Xbox either. And really a STICKER came on the front of your Xbox's drive "DO NOT MOVE WHILE DISK IN SPINNING." I know because I looked it up.
Yes but the ps3 also doesn't have a disc tray to hold the disc.
Disk trays don't matter upside down bro. Who plays a console upside down, like the fuck.
It appeals to the public and makes them go "Ooooh, pretty."
No? When over half of your exclusives are boring as hell it's not a very good incentive at all.
what's "boring" is subjective. it is a fact, however, that the more exclusives you have, the more gamers you can cater to.

I knock my PC a lot and nothing has happened to the drives(HDD or DVD). They're made to withstand movement and impacts for a reason, unlike the 360's which will instantly ruin any disc the moment you touch the console.
I've moved my PS3 while playing a game too, and nothing has happened. It's a design flaw in the 360, not disc drives in general.
Honestly, I don't get what's up with all the hype about Bluray...
It's just a standard high definition film with Highdefinition sound and the movie sped up by 3/4ths of a second to make movement in the film "liquid smooth"...
My computer was tipped over and I lost 2 harddrives. 1 shattered internally and the other just stopped working. wont even find it at boot up.

I've thrown my gamecube and its 100% fine. The fuck.
Don't get me wrong when I say this. I love the online play, games, and controller of the 360. That's why I went from the Sony in the last gen (PS2), to Microsoft this gen (360). But, come on Microsoft.
The 360 is a powerful machine. And it lets you know that. What with the jet-powered industrial strength cooling fans, it shakes the Earth itself when it runs. And those fans, for all their bark, don't really seem to do much. The thing still runs at a heat that would make Smokey the Bear weep and beg to be killed.
Which brings me to my next complaint. The infamous Red Ring of Death. Way to go Microsoft. Brilliant design there. A console that they know runs hot, and they use things like lead-free solder to hold the all-important CPU and GPU units onto the motherboard. As such, as soon as the 360 gets hot (which it's bound to), it shits itself, and Red Rings. With a previously 20% failure rate, the 360 is clearly establishing a new standard for reliability.
And the appetite for disks is insatiable in the 360. Mine, personally, seemed quite fond of the brand new, 60 dollar disks that I had just bought. Apparently they still had the taste of money on them or something. Did you know that in every 360, a 25 cent piece of foam would've solved the problem of its oversensitivity to eating disks.
So, with my most recent Xbox failure, I think I'll take my 300 dollars to Sony now.
/rant.
You made the right choice!

So, just because microsoft is too cheap to solve their system's flaw, they decide to put a little sticker on the front? "WARNING-CONSOLE DEVELOPERS SUFFERED FROM HEINOUS MENTAL DEFICIENCIES"

No they told you not to move the console while playing, that makes sense to me.
Who moves a console while playing anyway?
No they told you not to move the console while playing, that makes sense to me.
My point isn't that it's not user error that results in eaten disks, my point is that it was an easy fix on microsoft's part.
I agree with the op. I bought my brand new Xbox 360 and when I first turn it on I get the red ring. So I think to myself "Okay things like this happen." so I return it for a new one and it works fine I took all the precautions like keeping it in an open area. Then a month later I get the E-74 and at that point I've become fed up with it. I don't care how attractive some games are, I'm done with it I'm sticking with my Wii ,PC ,and new PS3.

Another Easy fix is to not move the god damn console while it has a disc in it spinning at a 1000 rpm or so.
It's not that hard.
I'm going to have to agree with Trunk here.
It's like the guy who sued the coffee machine company because he crashed his car trying to brew some coffee on the freeway.

I'll be your doctor, to help immediately alleviate this...first play Uncharted...and then a second application of Uncharted 2 shall leave you with gooey boxers.

Yes...I'm aware. Thus me asking your permission to BAWWW. Did you not catch that?
The PS3 would have easily surpassed the Xbox 360 if Sony didn't completely fuck up the friends system. They made it too complicated and over-the-top to be considered useful.
Even the invites system, you have to go to the main menu of every game to check your invites for it.
ironically i've never had any of the problems that apparently all people get with 360
from high heat to extremely loud jet fans...
maybe people just don't know how to care for a console?
then again i did break my Playstation 2 just before getting my 360 so maybe it was just so happy about that that it decided to love me forever

Except it eats discs while not moving too. It's a huge design flaw. What you're proposing is the same as saying "don't play games and it won't red ring! Simple". Stop defending Microsoft's poor decisions blindly.
Mine has never chewed disks but it did RROD twice.
Also what bothers me most is how casual it has gone, ust look at the fucking avatars and shit. Not to mention it feels a lot like cheap plastic crap compared to the PS3 (at least the fat one).
I haven't touched mine in 6 months now, I'll dust it off once a decent exclusive comes along, but that won't be for a long time it seems.
My PC on the other hand has never had hardware failures.
