:crossarms:
You're in a hospital. Your flashlight suddenly stops working. You pay no mind to it and push onward. Soon your head begins to throb as you near the final corridor before the staircase that will lead you to the entrance and then the outside world. Just one room left before the fire stairs: The lobby. You've been dreading this moment the entire chapter. You've seen the nurse, she's been watching you, studying you, almost. As the lights flicker and die one by one in the entrance lobby, she is suddenly there, behind the desk. The fear in your mind accelerates, the pain in your head almost bringing you to your knees. She's just pacing back and forth behind the desk, chittering to herself. The door is just on the other side of the room.
You can make it. You try to run, but instead you take a wobbly step. Frantically groping through the dark for your flashlight, you find the switch, but no light comes out. The only light is coming from the sanctuary on the other side of the room. So, stuttering step after stuttering step, you walk forward, your breath catching every time she turns her head. She's paying no mind to you, left to her own devices. She's just standing there muttering about scalpels and victims and
She's staring at you. Directly at you. No, through you. You freeze, unable to move. Will she suddenly be in your face again? No, she's pulled that one far too many times so far. Will the black dress girl appear to you? She's probably left you for dead by now. You hold your breath, waiting until she turns around and starts pacing again. She doesn't. You can't see any of her features save for her waist-length coat, nurse's hat, and gleaming gloves painted with blood. It's completely dark, but you can tell that her eyes are locked with yours.
Your feet shuffle onward. The only sounds you can hear are your own footsteps and her incessant rambling. The background noise, the white noise, the ringing of the announcer's voice in your ear. All gone. In this moment, it is just you and her. Your gaze has met hers and there's no looking away until you can just reach out and grab the goddamn door why is it so far away jesus christ it's like she's staring directly through you into another world and even beyond that it's like she could jump out at any moment and murder you like the rest of the patients and goddamn it why can't you just fire your stupid fucking gun and kill her already and
Your hand clasps the door handle. You throw open the double doors. The hallway is lit. Your flashlight works. You are still alive. You take a minute to regain your composure and move onto the next room.

I'll be honest, one of the shortest parts of the game was the most effective to me, and this was it. It's just a short, 30 second encounter, but it was so tense and well done.
The whole mod was well done. I loved it.
This mod was great as an action game, but most of the time I was just thinking "Wait, didn't I see this exact scene in F.E.A.R. already?", and it completely ruined it for me. There's only one part I really felt any true horror.
[sp]During the part where you need to replace the fuse for the CAT scanner, I was just going about my business, popping out the old fuse when all of a sudden the subtitles started spamming "DON'T TURN AROUND" like 50 times, and then shortly after I heard a slow tapping on the glass behind me.
I was genuinely terrified to turn around. The whole scene was terrifying, because the subtitles aren't supposed to be part of the game universe, which makes it unexpected, and incredibly creative. That part alone made me want to just stop playing, especially when I finally turned around and saw nothing there. The next 5 minutes were fucking intense, just waiting for something like that to happen again.
Then good old cliche zombie comes around the corner, I blow his head off and any semblance of tension is completely broken.[/sp]
That part alone was absolutely brilliant. True horror like it's meant to be. It almost made up for what was mostly just running around shooting zombies for 2 hours.
The last level really didn't scare me at all. [sp]Once an explanation was given for the scariness, it ceased to be scary to me[/sp]. I fully agree.
Part of what makes something scary is not knowing anything about it.
Fear of the unknown.
As soon as I was told why all this weird stuff was happening, all future "scary" scenes instantly had less of an impact.

Horror games (and mods) should be about horror, not making you feel like an action-hero, gunning down the ugly zombies that slowly shuffle towards you.

Exactly! Horror shouldn't be about "Blood and zombies and scary things that pop up in your screen", it should be about playing on our deepest fears. Something as simple as knowing something is right behind you, but you have no idea who or what it is, is enough to trigger fear.
We need to define some new genres I think. Place things like NH2 into a Paranormal Action category or something, and keep it separate from the Horror genre.

Atmospheric horror > Gory/action horror any day.
What games fall under the atmospheric genre?

Penumbra series

Silent Hill series

Condemned

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series

Afraid of Monsters mod for Half-Life 1

What I thought of the game's scare tactics I wrote in another thread.
Here's a sort of a review, and remember I know it's a free mod but I have the right to criticize it, for playing it takes time, time of which I'd rather not have wasted.
I've played a lot of horror games, some of the ones that use really true fear rather than cheap scares was probably Penumbra, and a couple of the Silent Hills, and maybe one of the first Resident Evils, this mod introduces nothing new into the horror orientated gaming world, it is fun, but not very scary, and has a very predictable storyline. I knew from the start the moment I saw [sp]the Doctor that he was a bad guy, well cause he bitches at me saying that I must have a gun to survive, or an axe, it's waay to dangerous in here etc.. but he himself doesn't have a single drop of blood on him nor does he seem to be carrying any weapons,[/sp] I don't know if this was a clever trick of foreshortening or just a detail they failed to notice.
The scares were very cheap, after the first few zombies get up and start slashing at you once you pass them, it becomes a routine, even on hard there is no real sense of danger, it's all cinematography, hallways slowmotion as a woman walks across the screen- ooooh..
If she were to start running at you, screaming about to kill you and you'd have to run away cause your bullets don't affect her, then I'd be scared, because then there'd be a sense of danger, then the next time you'd hear her crying in another room or see her shadow in a room or soemthing, you'd shit your pants and be too scared to go into that room knowing she's there waiting for you. I'm not scared if she just pops up infront of my face looking at me for 12 milliseconds and leaves, so now if I see her shadow in a room, I'd probably just bunny hop into the room happily and I know that everything would go into slow mo she'd look at me and disappear or something.
And everytime I'm walking through a corridor or a vent or soemthing, I'm always ready for something to break and jump out of nowhere, cause after the first few times it happens, again it becomes a routine, then by the time 50% of the game is done, all the tricks have been played, and the style of the game is imprinted in my head, oh look a narrow corridor, I'm in slow motion, I wonder what's going to happen next. oooh she appeared infront of me now the door is gone, what must I do, turn around okay, the door is over there now.
There is no real sense of harm in this game other than the zombies. The most scary thing about the game were the "fast zombies?". In real life what do we fear, we fear the unknown because we feel as though it will bring us harm, and harm brings us closer to death, we fear death. In a game where nothing besides zombies that you can empty a double barrel shotgun into can bring you harm, then there is no reason to fear, other than a loss of bullets.
It was a very nicely constructed mod, I enjoyed it, but all their ideas of horror were just cheap pop out of the dark scare thrills, nothing was really scary.
I still can't get over this post:
wow get over it you ninny
the mod wasn't that scary but it was incredibly well made, the boss battle was a very unique non-npc creation (something you don't see that often in mods). yes, there are many, many flaws with the mod. such as commonly used skins, and maybe a few environment issues
the voiceacting is, in my opinion, flawless. all of the swat soldiers had their own unique personalities (though johnson wasn't around very long so we didn't hear much of him), the announcer was incredibly well done and i'd shake the hand of whoever voiced her, and ramero's voice.. oh man i love that voice. his voice showed innocence and the sign of being an ally at the beginning of the game. then at the end, that voice turns into one used by an enemy. someone who truly wants you dead and believes you can't stop him.
not to mention the mod actually gets you into the action. the parts where you are walking around with the swat members felt more than just a "lead rebel AI somewhere." they spoke conversations based on your actions and the environment, and you may have just really relied on them to help you keep going because of their aim and unlimited ammo.
there's also the big amount of clever easter eggs which only make the mod 10 times better, because a lot of modders tend to be too serious when it comes to making their mod and never bother to leave some humor lying around
i think nightmare house 2 is an 11/10 mod, not 12/10 because of the few issues i stated
that's my opinion and i'm sticking to it
While the mod was good, I don't like how it got considerably less scary through the second half of the game and favored more action-y shoot 'em up. (This is approx. when you meet the Swat members and from then on.)
First half had some really good moments, but from about the chapter Dead Signal it stopped being scary and turned into a dark shooter...lame.
[editline]08:59AM[/editline]
I still liked the action though, don't get me wrong, it was a good mod...just..it felt out of place.
Yeah, I agree.
I thought it was a nice change of pace.
Focussing more on the action, while still having the occasional horror scene just makes the horror scene look really weak and out-of-place.
for playing it takes time, time of which I'd rather not have wasted.
edit: hey doctor bob have you a bad day?
I was actually kinda disappointed by this mod.
But in a half-good way, because the first half of the mod had such awesome atmosphere and was so masterfully crafted and had such well made level design, but the second half quickly succumbed to being just an action game with the lights turned off. As soon as the SWAT came in and you got an SMG, along with the action packed climax boss battle, I began enjoying it a lot less.
I guess I was just disappointed that you guys didn't keep up the whole atmosphere of loneliness and despair in an environment that passive aggressively dicks with you and replaced it with more action focused shooting gameplay.
Yet another potentially good horror game ruined by a large focus on action.

The lack of originality in the scares really ruined how well-executed they could have been.
The enemies could have been truly horrifying, but oh no wait, you have a fully loaded shotgun PEW PEW! Move on to next room, shoot some more zombies.
once it gave you guns it felt like your standard fps game with some scares here and there

I agree.
I played through this earlier and I think I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. The level design was impressive with some very cool trickery going on, the atmosphere was good but has room for improvement, and while the scare tactics where just making you jump most of the time, it still had me reasonably scared.
I think people need to look at it like it is, a free mod made by the community. Took no longer than two hours to complete and I think it was an enjoyable experience!
Although... [sp]I was expecting to turn around at some point and the SWAT guys to all be mutilated zombies or hanging from the ceiling or something, that would have been fucking terrifying![/sp]
[editline]01:31AM[/editline]
Forgot to mention, the shooting bits DID ruin it a little...
I just finished the game. Pretty good as far as mods go. It wasn't exactly scary to be honest. It reminded me of FEAR too much with the random spooky stuff. I personally think Horror games aren't horror games unless you have no weapons of any sort... if you have a weapon it means you can kill whatever is threatening you, and that's why Black plague was better the Overture in many ways.
I think Penumbra's Genre is Horror survival, I want to see more of those.
Just finished it. I didn't think it was that scary, but there were definitely moments of horror like the [sp]subtitles spamming "Don't turn around!"[/sp] Certain parts seemed cliche, like a body lying in a hallway with the legs out of view around a corner that gets pulled away as you get close. Still a great mod, and Dr. Romero's lines at the end cracked me up.

Criticising is something. Coming back and replying to everyone thinking the mod is great for no reason is another ting. We all have oppinions. For examples I thought the Shower scare, the announcer telling me there's something behind me,the manequin turning to flesh , the uboa easter egg and the shrinking room wwhere pretty scarry.

This is a forum, you know.
If you took the time to read, you will notice that I pick comments that both praise the mod and criticise it.
If you two are going to fight, please do it in a PM. It sucks that we have to read through your argument.
