Bob this is action-horror and all your criticisms boil down to the game not being survival-horror enough. You're not "critiquing" anything, you're complaining that it isn't the game you wanted.

Why are people comparing this mod to games like Penumbra?
And why are people saying that it's better than Silent Hill and Resident Evil, when it comes to horror?

When it comes to resident evil, IT IS better when it comes to horror, even the older games weren't scary :P
But anyone saying this can compare to Penumbra or Silent Hill is retarded. I think the mod was great and loved the scares but Silent Hill had me to the point where I wouldnt play it at some points.
Oh yes, because the brightly-lit rooms of NH2 are so similar to the dingy, dark corridors of Penumbra.
Where on earth are you getting this from - Are you playing on an über-bright plasma monitor or something? Most rooms had just one light source at most and lots of areas were near-pitch-black. Maybe you need to turn down your gamma.
The shooter-sections of the game were purely present for the sake of pacing. This is probably the most subjective aspect of all games; No user plays the game in exactly the same ways so what works for me may not work for you. The pacing and theme-switching worked relatively smoothly for me, even better for others, and not so good for you. Too bad.
A lot of scares are cliché simply because there are only so many ways to scare the player. The creators of the mod has not played every horror game released, so similarities is not necessarily imitation. It had a fair share of originality on most points which is quite honestly more than what you can ask of most mainstream horror games. If we all just replay it two or three times I think we can all settle on the fact that it was not beyond Valve quality, but significantly above average - I would have no problem paying money for this game.
Yes, there is a high degree of circlejerking going on in this thread, but there's no call for pissing on the party. Chill and let people senselessly praise it if they feel like it. You didn't pay for the experience anyway.
Leg.. it.

I'm playing on a 1280x1024 17" monitor.
I had manually adjusted the game brightness just as it told me so (barely visible text).
I don't know if I have to show you screenshots of the rooms in question, but the majority of rooms in this mod are well-lit.

The huge-emphasis on action just made the horror dull.

A lot of people keep saying that they would pay for this mod.
I just don't understand that.
On originality with horror: yes, the developers could have been more creative with their horror tactics if they just used their imagination. There is no limit to how much you can scare the player or how original you can make your horror.

I'm sorry, but this is an online forum.
You call my comments "pissing on the party", I call it "exercising my right to comment on this mod".
This seems to be quite an issue on these forums - people just don't like it if you post a comment saying you don't like something and give your reasons why.
They'll tell you to "go make your own X, if you don't like it then!!" or they will insult you because they can't think of a logical or reasonable response.
Dragon told me I had to do this. I don't want my house pushed down. :saddowns:

Holy shit are they scary. Same with shadow people, they do the same thing. They don't kill you or hurt you, but they are scary as fuck and you will find out why.
They don't hurt you
They do
Well they don't go after you.
Because I'm an attention whore, I now present to you a link to a thread in which I posted links to my playthrough of NH2. You may now enjoy the experience of having a British bloke react to the game. And screaming. And then you can laugh at how much of a pussy I am.

Uhm, what are shadow people?
Im playing the Prologue and I got 1 of those "a la alma" popup in the air, after going through a bedroom where the lights went out, is that it?
Something tells me the Source engine could be very good for a horror game. The ambience sounds aswell from HL2 are enough to set the sparks.
Edit: Did that TV just changed from static to a very Ring-esque... thing? :ohdear:
Edit2: Ain't gonna sleep tonight...

Is it just me, or I went through that part, completely uncaring, because all I could think is that "Those guys are just sprites. Last time I've seen so many sprites, was in They Hunger. Mmmm... tree sprites.". Then I ran into one, called author a bastard, and had to evade them.

If you looked close enough, the TV will show the girl opening the door from the other side... but you can't see her

Same here. They weren't really that fantastic, I got a bit of a shock when I walked into the first one, but that's about it.
Game was good.
Me and my friend played this a while back and he beat it while I watched, very fun game and very good story.
It was really fun. 9/10. The A.I was average. I just wish that the SWAT actually hid behind walls, and that they could of been a little more independent of the player.
Stepped directly backwards into a shadow person.
Screamed aloud.
Parent came in to see if I'd fallen and hurt myself.
Embarrassment ensued.
