Stop wasting your life on games then, I've seen pics of some of you, you need to get out more.
I opened up my dad's copy of a Wing Commander game today and took a look at the old catalog inside. One game advertised, Strike Commander was eighty dollars, not including the extra speech pack and Tactical Operations expansion pack.
Mw2 expansion: 2 maps for 15 bux. Fuck that.
You know, here in Aus, new release GOOD games cost around $100 AUD to $110 AUD. Now shatap.
In Sweden we have to pay usually between 599 and 699 SEK.
That is if you buy it in Gamestop, GAME or some other gamer store.
But if you go to a normal electronics store they cost between 499 and 599 SEK.
And yeah, the Swedish crown is basically the dollar but with an added number.
Don't worry, the 60 dollar price tag will be done with soon enough, opening the door to 70 dollar games.
One of my local stores charge $70-90 (CAD) for new games.
They don't sell many games.
You're all still paying less than New Zealand and Australia have to.
Its true. All you Americans get pissy over the horrible $60 sales. while we can have from 5 to 15 dollars more depending on currency conversion.
I didn't even know companies were charging $60 for PC games until I went to pick up SC2. I wasn't paying any attention when the guy rang it up, so I naturally handed him $50. "You're $10 short buddy" What. I'm pretty sure I handed you a $50, wait, SC2 is HOW much?
Bullshit.
I just wait for Steam sales and buy a crapload of games, unless it's something I really want, like Valve games or the odd new independent title that grabs my attention.
I just wish that Blizzard (and other companies, but that's the only one I can think of right now) wasn't greedy as hell and actually dropped its games' prices once in a while. Doom II and its expansion cost what, fourty dollars today?
Honestly, even $30 for a single game is a bit much for me, Steam must have spoiled me.
And I'm a student without a job, I guess that counts too.
Then again, it makes people have to think about what they're going to buy, instead of doing it compulsively and buying games they never play.
This is why I've stopped buying new PC games from anywhere else but Steam. Even though Steam has that $ = € thing going on, it's STILL cheaper than the games that are on the shelves of the stores.
I didn't mind it at first, seeing as it was only a few games, but more and more publishers are thinking that they can do it too, so it's just a matter of time before every new PC game costs $60 or more.

Half-Life 2 cost $54.99 in 2004, which is analogous to $63.51 in 2010. The price of large budget games has consistently floated between $40-$70 for PC and console titles since 1994.
So I'm not sure what you're calling bullshit on- that you've lived under a rock the last 6 years and never bought anything mainstream doesn't mean the prices aren't justified.

Eh, I never saw any game above 50 dollars until around 2009.
Maybe I just have an incredibly poor memory.
Brand new ps3 games in iceland are priced at 150$.
360 and pc are around 100$.

Thats really stupid. To just assume the price and not checking up on it.
I hate how Walmart over prices games. I could go to Walmart right now and point out dozens of games that aren't even worth $50, 40, and 30 price tag. Especially Call of Duty 4. It's been like three years since it's been released and they still charge like $40 for it. CoD 4 isn't even all that great. It's campaign is too short and the multiplayer is broken.
That's not just walmart, it's because CoD is so popular they delay releasing it on budget labels for fucking FOREVER in order to rake in as much cash because they know people will still buy, and pay that much for it. Same with the sims games.
Well the Majority of PC games are still 50 and there are some Console games that instantly start out at 50, so I mean its really only fair. Not saying that I want to even pay 50 for a video game but its a Hobby and Drug and the companies know if you really want the game you'll pay an extra 10 bucks for it.
It's mostly just terrible publishers like Activision that arbitrarily charge more. They know that the games are so anticipated that they can crank up the price to the price of the console version (which is mostly expensive for a reason) and retards will still flock in their droves to give them money.
then wait for the game to go on sale if you don't want to pay that much
Online communities generally move from game to game, if you keep waiting for games to not be expensive you lose the golden age of the community most of the time.
I'm sorry, but very successful companies like IW charging $60 for CoD and topping the sales charts is only going to make other companies do the same thing. I mean, money hungry companies like Ubisoft and EA charging $60 for AC2 or MoH respectively are to be expected, but I'm afraid other companies may follow suit. I just don't see the reasons for inflated PC games prices besides general greed, especially when programs like steam cut out most of the middle man. These stingy companies like Ubisoft cry and moan about piracy killing their PC gaming sales and then go and charge $60 for them, as if their massive DRM didn't make the deal worse enough. It is just completely moronic.
Hopefully this $60 price tag fad will go away soon. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon.
Uh, dude, I've seen N64 Games for anywhere between $60-$100. Even older consoles were around $300-$500 when they came out.
There is no damn inflation or "greedy" companies. We are still paying the same we used to, N64 Games, SNES Games, and NES Games were all expensive at one point.
(Well: Actually, Activision is becoming greedy by not paying employees, hence the 30+ people suing them, some of whom still work for Activision)

then suck it up and pay for this mystical "golden age"
In reality $60 games in general have to stop and used games sells have to go away. The other option is that devs start focusing more on making a longer more polished game instead of throwing them out so fast.
we need $30 games Thanks
then suck it up and pay for this mystical "golden age"
omg u so rebel i wanna be liek u
only bad games cost $60
Starcraft 2 was worth the $60.
Cry some more, in Australia cod4 and cod6 etc. are $110 still in EB games. Shitload of fuck.
Wasn't cod6 banned in australia?
Not going to stop as long as people are buying it.
Online communities generally move from game to game, if you keep waiting for games to not be expensive you lose the golden age of the community most of the time.
What's the point of buying a game if you know that it's going to be a stupid fad that will last 3 months?
You should spend money on games that are like Garrysmod, HL/HL2 mods, CS/CS:S, or TF2/TF:C, those are communities that will last for a VERY long time. Not CoD12, Gears of War 4 or Guitar Hero 9.

Every game I've bought for the past few years on PC have been $50 unless its something like Oblivion GOTY.
I didn't buy PC games until I got into custom computers in 2008, so I have no idea what computer games cost before then. I was a huge console gamer before that, so I was used to playing xbox and dishing out $60 a game for that. Was xbox 1 $50 or $60 a game? I don't remember.
Starcraft 2 was worth the $60.
This is also true, I didn't really mind since it was so good.

The difference is, these new games have like no content and the single player is like 5 minutes long. Half-life 2 was fucking amazing. I mean, the single player is amazing. It probably took a lot more effort than games like MW2.
Plus HL2 got engine update for free while for MW2 you have to buy map packs for 15$/€.
I've tried doing calcs on the value of $50 USD in 2000 twice now on government data, and they've both come up over $60.
Unless you'd like to show us some different math using another currency (I'd say "or another data set" but the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics agrees with me and most independent data sets shoot significantly higher), you might want to recant that.
Just because the economy is in the shitter and the dollar is weak doesn't mean $60 isn't a lot of money.
