death should obviously be final, and you should obviously loose all your shit. skills are dumb, since then they require time to be put into a character that could be lost easily. crazybob's cops and robbers had a good system for dealing with this, life insurance. when you die, you just respawn with everything you had, but, the next price of life insurance doubled, and you can only take out up to 3 lives at a time, meaning if someone really wanted to fuck you over and were good or had a gang, they could kill you before you had a chance to pick up more insurance. Why do you guys keep talking about WoW? Theres other mmorpgs then WoW.
Put this idea on some big companies forum, keep it alive on that site. It's a longshot, but for all you know something could come out of it.
I think with some work you could probably build this on the stalker/hl2 engine, make a map, make the most epic script ever includes all the things we said, model a bunch of zombies, maybe 100 different models, not much difference between them then reskin the 100 models say 100 times and even allow player made skins to increase the total amount. Using the weapons you get from fps banana or one of the major stalker mods people would have much selectability. It would be a huge mod that slowly gets better kind of like garrysmod mod and would be highly circled around what the community thinks.

Random idea I'm shitting out here, but what if, like, the zombies and zombie animals are actually mutants which were caused by an alien parasite that came to earth in a meteor 80 years ago. So not only are there zombies, but there are all sorts of real fucked up monsters you'd have to be fending off. The forests are overrun with weird alien flora and they have these huge nests and shit like that.
As long as we are making up pie-in-the-sky ideas about a zombie game, I say we use Dwarf Fortress' damage system, where it calculates damage by organ, body part, and bone. Effectively making it so that if "Zombie A twists your left arm, snapping the wrist and cutting the artery!", your left arm would be next to useless, and you would begin to bleed out. Organ damage would do much more, forcing you to make a choice in fights: bladed weapons to take out players easier by way of precise organ striking, or blunt weapons to disable enemies, allowing you to take down zombies much easier (a zombie with four broken limbs is, quite obviously, a much safer zombie)
I'm just throwing this out there but what there was a fourth main faction, a shady biochemicals corporation with that was developing the virus further. They could have their own private army with limited access to powerful adrenalines and enhancers. They would also be able to take control of 'special' zombies and mutants and unleash them against members of opposing factions, like the Enclave control Deathclaws in Fallout 3.

If somebody with experience would do this game I would be the happiest man on planet. But NOOOO, they always do shit WoW clones.
This is a mistake people always do when making these type of games. You can't have a post apocalyptic wasteland and be walking around with "heavy weapons" and Eotech sights. It should be rusty old weapons. Preferably Warsaw pact style for that post-apoc look. Putting an M4 in it is stupid IMO.
Considering that this is the US, there will be US made weapons and not Warsaw pact weapons.

I might work on this game and do some programming things, but I won't do any art related stuff, and don't expect me to work 24/7 on this, I have other projects that are more important. If you guys are actually serious about this, I'll help. Also, I won't implement some features, either because I can't, or they would make the MMO lag too much (cough locational damage cough) Also I won't host this.

It seems like a good idea until you sort of ruined it with the classes (fighter/assassin etc) and the dungeons. The dungeons make it too MMO orientated and make it seem like less of a zombie apocalypse. The classes is just sort of dumb; in a world where ravenous zombies are taking over, not [I]nearly[/I] everybody would have a gun. Especially in big cities like New York. For this to work... Melee weapons; Everything is a melee weapon.

look at fort zombie i think thats what your talking about but in bigger cities and to address the car issue you could have a arterial freeway that connects each zone and only has to get out in the big cities also instead of disease zombies you would need an explanation on the infinite amount of them like for example alien Terra-forming mission that hit earth and is creating mutant humans/bosses and humanoid plantlike minions. also if you die there should be SEVERE penalties or a clone system that you have to update like eve also it doesn't make sense to have much factional warfare in a world were most people are gone.
Thing about using the Borderlands System, only with players making the guns? You could pick up various parts that add various stats to guns, and then attach them to make custom guns, by defining the parts we could keep overpowered stuff out. How about not even having major cities? The best you get is like a shantytown, but have lots of them to keep the game areas fairly lowly populated.
