I would seriously suggest fast infected. Slow infected are really only tense in very small spaces (like most FPS levels) and would be too easy to outrun. Only massive hordes (1000+) would be effectively scary, and that would cause huge amounts of lag.
I would seriously consider playing such a game as I've always wanted a game like this. However I didn't read the full OP so I'll make some suggestions/points of interest: How will the controls handle? Being a TPS (third person) I'd prefer the controls to be rather simple and fast, like pretty much any non-MMO shooter game (Battlefront 2 for example). The only MMO I've played was Anarchy Online, and I have to say that I really hate the control scheme in that. Also although we have to be with a faction wouldn't it just be cool to go around the place solo? I wouldn't want to do quests and all faction-ey stuff, I'd just be out in the forests all day hunting zombies and other non-infected. Give me a Sniper rifle, survival tools and forest camo then find me a nice ledge on the mountain and I'll be guranteed to have fun. Also as people are mentioning about slow and fast zombies I really don't know what would be better. Slow would just be to easy and relaxing and wouldn't work in open environments so fast zombies it is. Well atleast when they don't fight they are all slow and in hordes.
Slow zombies would be a pretty scary thing..Strengh and speed wear down the more you walk unless you rest, sleep or eat. And in most movies slow zombies have a amazing ablity to track you down. Also I demand Player Infected
Rate me boxes, but I'm somewhat confused as to what the purpose of this thread is. Are we just fantasizing about a game like this, and cramming as many ideas as we think are cool as we can into it?
As long as we are making up pie-in-the-sky ideas about a zombie game, I say we use Dwarf Fortress' damage system, where it calculates damage by organ, body part, and bone. Effectively making it so that if "Zombie A twists your left arm, snapping the wrist and cutting the artery!", your left arm would be next to useless, and you would begin to bleed out. Organ damage would do much more, forcing you to make a choice in fights: bladed weapons to take out players easier by way of precise organ striking, or blunt weapons to disable enemies, allowing you to take down zombies much easier (a zombie with four broken limbs is, quite obviously, a much safer zombie)
There is no safe cigarette. There is no safe zombie.
As fantastic of an idea this is, there would have to be a large amount of fine tuning involved. Not to mention it would cost an extraordinary amount to even produce.
This got my seal of approval.
There is no safe cigarette. There is no safe zombie.
Too true. However, there is such a thing as a safer zombie. A zombie without use of its limbs (considering that they're all broken) is a very easy target for brain elimination.
I would pay $20+ a month for this game, albeit with the idea a little refined.
I think the size and scope of this project is a little large for a gaming community like facepunch, nevertheless, it's a really fun idea and it probably will happen some day.
You have some very good ideas, but I personally think there are to many rpg elements. I don't like games where it takes ages to level up and get all the good stuff.
I don't think classes would be any good. It's better to just leave everything skill based. Leveling up skills would also be through doing the respective action rather then getting some point everytime you level up to distribute. In such a game were NPCs are a huge threat and oppossing factions are a huge threat as well, a high level of metagame would ruin everything. It would just turn out to be one huge guild/faction kicking everyone's ass with superior skills and weapons.

If i ever win the lottery, i'm gonna give as much $ as i can to this project, because the gaming world needs a zombie mmorpg just like this one.
You can already get something exactly like this. Its called World of Warcraft. Just go to an area with zombies, and stay there. This idea isn't unique at all.
... are you shitting me?

Again, put this on some big gaming companies forum, and keep it alive through people on the forum/FPers on that forum. It's definitely a longshot, but you never know, a smart company would pay attention to your idea a little bit.
To make skill leveling a little more "class-like", make a limit to max level of skills. As in max. of 150 points in skills, for example. If you'd start training a skill that is low, your least used skill will begin to deteriotate to keep the total of points in 150. This would eliminate older players having UBER LEET SKEELZ and having maxed out everything, while eliminating classes.
I don't like the op's idea though. Classes seem a bit lame. Since your a human you shouldn't be in a class where you do better only in a certain thing, but something like skill sounds much better.
There should be an option to get infected, but a controlled infection, so you can use weapons and all that with penalties, like 20% less reload speed and shit like that due to you being partly mutated. You also would be weaker, but you could make 3 zombies max to follow you, like pets. And you would have different mutation styles, and you could, for example shoot spines (piercing damage), saliva (poison) or spores (explosive), and you could have a similar type of mutation, like a spore shooting sniper, for a mutated assassin, and so on.

[editline]12:28AM[/editline] And don't forget you can only have three.
Well if they're easy to kill why not let the player control maybe 5-7? Not too many where it would overwelm the human.
Since when is the US the world?
Here's what I think would make the game great. -Over the shoulder view or third person -Skills instead of classes -Become zombie after dieing and become human by getting killed -Ability to search through trash and dead people -Ability to barricade -Ability to take metals and put them to gether to create random things for barricading such as a fence -Guns will be scarce but you can buy them at a thrift shop (there will be a number of guns per person limit) -Being allowed to fix up an sgine and use it to power a building -Being able to set your spawn point for when you respawn as a human -Time limit as a zombie [editline]07:04PM[/editline]
Since when is the US the world?
He has never heard of the outside world
... are you shitting me?
No. It is not unique at all. It shares everything with other MMOs. Factions. Classes. Skill points. ETC... In order to make a good zombie game, you need two things, realism, and actual survival elements.
Yes.
Well then this sucks.
Cut out the MMO part and you've got my vote.
