:V Shitty online. Freezes randomly for no fucking reason.
Hasn't froze for me yet.
Just for the people here in the General Game Discussion corner, i'm going to try to assemble all my help and advice from the Valve Games thread. [editline]01:04AM[/editline] ADVICE AHOY ------------------------ The game is interesting so far, not too different but enough to make sure you actually work as a team. Reloading disposes of the magazine entirely, so you want to shoot until you're empty on the current mag - each weapon comes with a specific amount of max magazines. There's a Gears of War-esque reload system where pressing Reload when it's on the white spot of the bar reloads faster. Missing that white spot and pressing Reload will jam your gun, or you could just not hit Reload and not take any chances. What is normally the flashlight key in other Source games is the Alternate Fire here, the usual alt-fire right-mouse button being reserved for the later mentioned melee - some guns (not all) have their own alt-fire, it'd seem. You lose health, fast, from enemy hits, and friendly fire is always on. Each of the four classes have their own abilities - Officer has balanced equipment and has no relative duties or specialities by themselves, Special Weapons have big guns and are a major damage dealer while providing covering fire, Medic has the ability to heal folks of course, and Tech is needed to progress through certain parts of the levels via hacking terminals (done by two minigames - one is matching lines up to the ends, and the other is matching four digits of 1 together side-by-side as they all move up and down). The trailer that had the guy getting killed ended in Mission Failure was because it was the Techie getting crushed. Stick together and make sure you know what's in store for the mission so you can do your role accordingly. You can customize your loadout pre-mission as well as choose from two different characters for each class (8 characters; six male, two female) with their specific stats. There's also offhand items used with the number 1 key, like flares, self-healing medkits, laser mines, and a portable welder to seal and open doors up Killing Floor-style. You can pick up off-hand items in-game as some are strewn about but you'll drop your current one, like a trade-off. If an enemy is too close, you can right-click to do some (actually lethal) melee bashes to the point that it's actually a combo. What would normally be a jump key instead gives you an evasive roll that is fast and quick, and it really helps in creating distance between you and the rushing aliens if your teammates have your back. Note that any reference to items and weapons is with the starting bunch - that's right, unlockable guns and offhand items. Via a mission's conclusion (both by death and survival), you and your teammates, if cheats aren't activated, will gain experience according to various conditions, like how many enemies you killed, how many objectives were completed (some aren't completely necessary for level completion), how much damage was recieved, and even a little extra for achievements gained in the mission. These experience points level you up, and at specific levels you unlock a new weapon or offhand item. Each has different uses, allowing players to prepare handily for each individual mission. The game itself asthetically feels like a giant, but stylish and good, Left 4 Dead 2 modification. I'm not always able to connect to co-op servers (probably due to everyone trying to download the game and all), but if players work together well then this may be big - the game is like a far more condensed and streamlined Left 4 Dead. The game instructor is there, you have the same basic concept of swarms of enemies coming at you, and as usual with Source there's lots of familiar props and sounds strewn about. One key difference besides the gameplay itself, though, is that you're not survivors improvising equipment - you're professional military operatives, and it shows as the playable characters generally are more skilled than any of the Left 4 Dead characters. Of course, zombies/infected don't compare well to motherfuckin' ALIENS. If you want to get yourself situated, play the Offline Practice. It takes you through a mission with three objectives, that you can play over and over. Three bots (that you can customize the loadouts and equipment of) help you, although they generally act like the Left 4 Dead 2 bots (to the point that my medic almost always fucking dies by the end). No competitive modes thus far. --- To those not yet initated or wanting to know more about possible hazards, there are enemies known as Parasites, that are the equivalent of facehuggers - they jump on a player and start draining their health at really fast rates. The only way to get them off yourself or another player is to heal their health past the green point on their health bar, as the green bar is the infestation gauge. Here's a few hints i've learned and heard for dealing with parasites infecting teammates in the later levels: 1. Use a self-healing kit. It'll keep your health up, but chances are it won't completely get rid of the parasite infecting you. 2. Throw down a heal beacon. These heal everyone inside them, and while it drains the beacons a hell of a lot (and thus wastes heal beacons if your teammates are idiots and keep getting attacked by parasites), this is the most surefire method so far. 3. There's a medigun that you get at a higher level, which you can use to deal with parasites on others. However, despite not having to reload, you can't refill the ammo on the Medigun, and holy SHIT does trying to heal off a parasite drain it. Not recommended. Extra advice: Many people probably use the male medic guy because, hey, combat medics are awesome. I'd advise switching to the female medic, Faith, for the levels where the parasites are around, because she not only heals more health overall than the other guy but she cures players infected by parasites faster as well. PS: If you die by a Parasite, your body explodes into several more Parasites that will promptly attack your teammates. --- Apparently if your Tech dies mid-level and he has a panel to crack or something, your mission is failed - but if there's no panels to crack and your Tech dies off, it continues like normal. Too bad the game doesn't actually inform you of this. Then again, maybe it's better people don't know so they'll actually try to keep their Tech alive. --- Interested in having a little personal touch of your favorite music playing while kicking alien ass? Goto Audio in the Options and select something that has "Combat Music" in the title. It's only for specific events (like those at the end of missions or during certain spots), but having an upbeat boss theme with guitars wailing when you're running in the final mission is one hell of an experience. For those having trouble with parasites, remember where their locations are for future playthroughs and prepare with the Tesla Gun or Flamethrower. Don't rush, naturally. And make sure one medic is prepared to use Heal Beacons on the spot. --- Running low on ammo? Want to cover your teammates without wasting shots? Practice your melee. As mentioned, it's actually lethal and can be done in a three-hit combo (all classes and characters have the same speed and combo with it). What seems like a useless side move used only one time in the game to clear out some boxes in the way can actually be a life-saver if used right - the normal swarm enemies can be killed by one melee attack in Easy and two-three in Hard. Naturally, not EVERYTHING is melee-able (or recommended to melee - see acid bugs, parasites, swarm boomers, and shield bugs), but it has its uses. Be sure to master it.
Awesome game but the speedruns are so hard, only 3 seconds away from getting it.
Oh man, I just had the best round ever on Timor Station. Playing as faith, I somehow lost my gun and had to do most of the mission without one. Rolling around infectors, under the green spit stuff, and then using a mining laser to fight. I ended up dying though. :saddowns:
You know what's funny? AS for 2k4 was partially inspired by the original Alien Breed game for AMIGA and later DOS, which was a very good game. The Alien Breed remake comes out and from the demo, it didn't seem that good - and Alien Swarm comes out and within 5 minutes of play I enjoy it more than the remake. It's funny because a remake of an old game made by the same devs is worse than a free game made by guys who originated in the mod community.
Before anyone asks: IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO LOAD HL2, EP2, TF2 OR L4D2 MAPS IN ALIEN SWARM. I HAVE TRIED, IT WILL CTD WITH NO ERROR.
Have an achievement that 0% of the world has, and a few that .1% of the world has. Also, what level is everyone? I'm a 24 or a 25.
I promoted
Have an achievement that 0% of the world has, and a few that .1% of the world has. Also, what level is everyone? I'm a 24 or a 25.
I made it to 12 or 13. Last thing I got was the freezing sentry gun. Which is a lot of fun.
God DAMN I really hate how you can't stop welding once you've started. I'll just be the last one alive or somewhat isolated, and then decide to weld a door shut, and suddenly one of those randomly spawned swarmers comes out of nowhere and beats me to death while I'm helplessly welding a door.

Maybe it just reverses the action you were just doing and un-welds it instead. :\
There is an in-game map editor by the way. In Steam Tools, install the Alien Swarm SDK. Run the game as normal. Activate the console. Open it. Type 'SV_Cheats 1' Type 'ASW_tilegen' You can create randomly generated missions as well!
I can't see why this was over looked. What all is available in it? Can you add like chat directions or is for map making only?
Oh okay now I know where to go.
Can't wait to play this, going on a steady 512kb/s!
not advice
This really is more of "The game is like this..." than advice, and the ones that are "advice" are very obvious.
Only just downloading now, my shitty download monitor is gone. Should be done in 30 mins so im happy, got something to play all summer long.
Finished the campaign on normal with a few friends, was pretty fun. I haven't decided whether 2 combat medics or a peace medic and another officer/specialweapons is more efficient. I'm definitely loving the medic though.
Does anybody have the hat for TF2? I got the achievement but no hat :C Nevermind, just got it. It's awesome.
^You need to die once to obtain it in TF2 No pain no hats
Hit level 27, highest level obtainable. Fuck yeah (the grenade launcher is orgasmic)
What the hell? I reached level 12 yesterday but now I've been bumped back to level 2 again. :wtc:
How long do you have to play to hit 20+? Matchmaking is broke for me.
How long do you have to play to hit 20+? Matchmaking is broke for me.
Id say around 30-40 missions(im not sure, im only 6) but in early levels up to about 14 or so, you tend to level up each mission.
Game's awesome, just played some with mah neighbors.
Fucking. Parasites.
Flame thrower is a beast, all you do is single click that shit, don't hold it down at all (No setting friendlies on fire that way) and set enemies on fire, most of them will die from it and not attack while on fire, then either go on about your business and let your friends clean up... They also rock against parasites
