Turns out that Mant's die at the sight of a torch, so you can equip soldiers/gnomes with them to fight them off. I'm going to start a new game anyway, my Peaceful game got boring and my old brink-of-death one got annoying. I should try an above ground town for real this time.
Currently trying to make a advanced fort with steam engines and traps everywhere so that i can defend my fort without the use of my gnomes. Curious if this will work out

Looks intresting, I hope its not as shit as DF when i try it out
Looks intresting, I hope its not as shit as DF when i try it out
Why do you think DF is shit?
Why do you think DF is shit?
Cause i cant tell what goes on. It looks like someone decoded white noise into visual data.
Cause i cant tell what goes on. It looks like someone decoded white noise into visual data.
Same for me. I can't associate anything I see in Dwarf fortress. I literally have to memorize what every ASCII symbol means and what they mean together and how they interact. I might as well be playing pen and paper RPG's. It's infinitely easier than trying to get into DF.
Honestly, you can solve half that problem by using a tile set but that still doesn't make deciphering the games interface any easier. Gnomoria is a really good looking game though and I freaked out like a little girl when I right clicked and the menu popped up. "HOLY FUCK! Look at that! Convenience!"
Purchased. Very fun game for being in alpha. Very impressed. I cannot wait to see what else is added by release!
I actually have a harder time playing this compared to Dwarf Fortress. I'm weird.

except you have to put in a lot of time and effort to learn how to play
except you have to put in a lot of time and effort to learn how to play
yea, I understand some people don't want to sink that much time into a game, but to call it a shit game on that basis is stupid as hell his biggest complaint could be resolved if he did a little research too
"I don't want to put any time and effort into learning a new game, thus it's shit!!"
That's a legitimate complaint though. If it's inaccessible to all but a small fraction of players who have the patience or mental capacity to learn the complexities of DF than it's a 'bad game' If EA or Valve released a game with DF graphics and defended it by saying "Well, if you don't want to put time and effort into learning it, than it's your fault. It's not a bad game, you're just a bad person." they'd never make a profit. It's not even a debate though, because DF is free and they didn't really make it to have it marketed and sold. So if it's a good/bad game is irrelevant but people who like DF need to understand how mind bogglingly difficult it is for the average person to play instead of just calling them out for not being able to play it and dismissing them as lazy or whatever it is DF players think of us.

I've been playing without a tileset too, with one the game is even easier to pick up.
Bought this cause it's awesome. I'd buy Dwarf Fortress if Toady would let me. I've donated in the past, but I wish I could donate a one-time fee. I'd happily pay $25 for Dwarf Fortress, since it's given me much more than that in enjoyable playtime. Anywho, loving this game so far. Music is getting a bit frustrating, but it's nice nonetheless! [editline]13th November 2012[/editline] Oh yeah, forgot my original question: How the fuck do I get rid of all that clumped soil?! [editline]13th November 2012[/editline] Dwarf Fortress literally takes 2 hours of fun, interactive tutorial learning to get pretty much 70% of the basics of what you need to play the game with. There are so many awesome YouTube tutorials that we didn't have back in the "day" :v: Have the YouTube tutorials up and play along with them. After an hour or two, you'll have a decent fort set up and you'll know most of the basics. The rest of the game is having the Wiki open to alt-tab and search anything you don't know. It's sort of "learn-yourself". You'll die a lot, but it's fucking fun, and you prepare better for it the next time around. It's an amazing game that is well worth the measly two hours of concentration to get it under wraps. And it's not even as if those two hours will be boring, because it won't, it's real fun!

Thanks.
The wierdest thing just happened to me. I was having the game run at 2x speed and were happy mining. I went to have dinner and when I came back I saw in the population tab that half of my population had died. Being on peaceful I couldn't understand how this had happened. Then I looked underground, it was like a massacre. There was quite a big water area underground, and my villagers, with their amazing AI, had been walking backwards through this water with the stuff back to the surface. This was ok with lumps of dirt, because it was quite light to carry, but with the stone they all drowned a little over halfway. TLDR: The AI slaughtered half my population on peaceful mode.
I have lost around 3 or so kingdoms to bad and lazy AI so far.
8.19 released
Workshop •Added "Craft To" option for workshops •The selected item will only be crafted if the total amount is less than the specified number •When "any" material is selected it counts all items and when a specific material is selected, only items of that material Grove •Groves are a designation, similar to Farms, that are automatically worked •Grove tasks are "Plant saplings", "Cut clippings", "Pick fruit" and "Fell trees" and each one can be toggled on or off •"Cut clippings" will remove leaves and fruit while "Pick fruit" only removes fruit. Fruit only grows when a tree has leaves, so only picking fruit will farm fruit faster while cutting clippings will allow your Grove to expand. •Groves can be designated over an existing tree and will be considered part of the grove even if the tree type is different than what is selected General •Observe Windows Mouse setting to switch left and right mouse buttons •Allow stairs to be built in rooms •When loading, detect and repair errors in the navigation graph Fixed •Crash when spotting mants •Crash when viewing rooms that had stairs and were deconstructed •Gnomes getting stuck trying to drink from a well •Gnomes getting stuck trying to pasture an animal that was innaccesible •Reset trap jobs persisting after a trap has been deconstructed •Crash when completing or saving a game with a broken reset trap job •Ammo pouch and quiver on corpses •Formation settings not saving under certain conditions
So how do I tell my gnomes to move things into storage containers? I've got loads of empty boxes and several full storage areas :v:
place containers into stockpile areas
Almost all my Gnomes just died in a retarded way. I couldn't find any coal and it was winter so I couldn't use my tree farm to make any for torches so some golems and beatles spawned and masscared everyone because like fucking retards they all kept throwing themselves weaponless at them until there were only five and one asshole finally decided that blocking the entrance to the mine like I told him to do eighteen hours ago was more important that decorating the great hall.
Does one have to download the newest version every time to update, or does it happen automatically?
Does one have to download the newest version every time to update, or does it happen automatically?
This. I have it via Desura but downloaded the client sooo, what do I do? Also 35 Gnomes killed themselves. Now I got 29 from Spring migration and I assembled a five-man strike force to go clear out the mines.
I'm bad at this, I will have to try playing again. Might stream it
Well, that was awesome. Kinda. I assembled my Mine Strike Force and sent them in. The way I mine is dig stairs like 5 or 8 levels down, mine a bit to make an open area with shafts branching out and than continue the pattern. So I'd send them down level by level guarding them until torches could be planted. Things were going great, I was clearing out shaft after shaft of Golems and Beatles with military-precision until around level 40ish when a zombie attacked. Bite one of my men, he turned, bit another and the cycle continued. Soon I had people bleeding out ALL over the mine and turning into zombies. Soon my forces were overwhelmed and they began to make for the surface, one got chopped up in the trap I set at the mine entrance topside but than they all began to pour out into my fortress, gnomes were being mauled in their sleep. I assembled every single gnome into squads of Militia men, they grabbed anything they could find and fought for their lives but soon they were outnumbered and backed into corners all over. The last gnome was the sole survivor of a miltia group who had managed to find some hide armor and an axe, fought a zombie but was hurt bad and began to run to dress his wounds with bandages, but a zombie blocked his path and he was surrounded on either side of the hallway. This is the way Gnomoria ends. Not with a bang, but a whimper.
gorey lore
That's... That's fucking awesome :v:
So what can I do with all of this leftover dirt? It's just stacking uncontrollably and I need to get rid of it somehow.
