Starcraft had Aeon of Strife, which was pretty sweet but not as popular. I'm pretty sure that's where DotA spawned from. If not, well they're both pretty much the same anyway except AoS doesn't have some super-elitist community behind it.

Or I didn't like DotA because the gameplay was boring to me. Having friends only lets me enjoy a game more if I like that game / map in the first place.
