The dreamcast flopped because of poor marketing. I agree it's a great system, but it's true. The Playstation 2 has the best success rate than any console out there and even had games being developed for it up till about a year or two ago.
The dreamcast sold well at first though, it was about 500,000 units.

Playstation 2 is part of a different generation. Use examples from the PS1.

Well that and because of the Sega Saturn. Why the Sega Saturn, you ask? Well, in North America, the Saturn got absolutely crushed in terms of sales by the Sony Playstation. While the Sega Saturn was $399 at release, the Playstation was $100 less with a $299 price. Plus, the Playstation and N64 had more interesting games. So when the PS2 came out, consumers were more interested in what Sony had to offer than Sega. Imagine if the Saturn did better in sales than it did, then maybe consumers would have been more interested in what Sega had to offer with the Dreamcast.
Also, US commercials for the Sega Saturn didn't have Segata Sanshiro:

I remember being really freaked out by the part towards the end of Donkey Kong 64 when you had to [sp]stop K. Rool from blowing up DK Isle[/sp] by doing a bunch of stuff in about 50 minutes. I got stuck on a couple of the challenges and finished with about 10 minutes left. I was still too freaked out to play it for some three years afterwards. I only beat it last year or so, I think.

Just thought I'd post something interesting, that cartridge there is of Morita Shogi 64, a Japanese only release in 1998, which has a RJ-42 port on the top of the cartridge so you can the play game online. It always pissed me off that us brits didn't get a yellow DK64 cart.
I used to play Conker's multiplayer with my friends all the time. I wish next gen consoles had multiplayer that fun.
