It needs to sound like it packs a punch, basically a THUMP not a WHOOSH. I can make one right now to show. Also you'll need at least 3 sounds with little variations or you'll hear the same sound every time, which can get on your nerves. (example: there are 3 explosion sounds and 3 revolver shoot sounds in Source)

Here, this could be how an electronic MP40 sounds like: [url]http://anyhub.net/file/1MQk-mp40.zip[/url] (4 sounds, you need to play them really quickly since the MP40 is a SMG after all) They don't need to be for the MP40, this could be any generic electronic weapon sound.
