• What misconceptions and mistakes (scientific, etc) really bother you in games?
As obvious as it is, I'm probably late, but I don't want to read the entire thread. One that's that's extremely unrealistic is getting shot. A single bullet could easily take you out of the fight or kill you. It doesn't take a full clip to the head to kill someone in real life. On the other hand, video games would practically be unplayable like that.
You've never played any even remotely realistic (I.E Red Orchestra, Operation Flashpoint (NOT THE SHIT SEQUEL), ArmA 2, etc), have you? Also: that's not a misconception, that's a design decision.
It's made on purpose and it's the perfect formula. Valve devs explained that in EP1 commentary.
No it's stupid and annoying and Valve are wrong.
Games where you hold the gun and it looks like when you shoot it should hit the wall/cover infront of you, but it doesn't.
This is a misconception. This is not. It's an intended part of the game. Probably a fast-paced lightning speed run fragfest. Or Half-Life.
Not... really...
It is when a game has different weapon classes, "Assault rifles", "Submachine guns", and then "Snipers" Might as well call assault rifles machine guns
No, because an assault rifle isn't a machine gun. Saying Sniper isn't incorrect because it's just a shortening of Sniper Rifle. Everyone knows what you're talking about if you say "I'm carrying a sniper." it's just slang. But if you say you're using a machine gun when carrying a rifle you're just being plain wrong.
in "serious" detective games, zoom and enhance.

Also, until I played video games, I didn't know the difference between a machine gun and an assault rifle. I assumed all automatic weapons (that weren't pistols) were machine guns, I thought an RPG was a rocket launcher and the ammunition was a straight-flying rocket, and rifles and some shotguns looked basically the same.
What's wrong with that?
A Sniper is a person. Sniper rifle is slang.
A Sniper is a person. Sniper rifle is slang.
No Sniper Rifle Isn't slang. And a Sniper isn't just a person, it can be used to describe the weapon.
A great example of the difference between clips and magazines:
Also, characters apparently can't smell anything. Even if you, as the player can't smell anything NPCs should still react to smell.
Also, characters apparently can't smell anything. Even if you, as the player can't smell anything NPCs should still react to smell.
Example of when this would happen. (That isn't already a scripted event)
Example of when this would happen. (That isn't already a scripted event)
Enemies could smell you in Tenchu Z if you went into a stink pit or a bin. You could wash the smell off by going in the water.
Example of when this would happen. (That isn't already a scripted event)
Although it's more of a backstory/assumed thing than an actual gameplay mechanic, the Brutes in Halo 2/3 become aware of your presence if you linger near them too long. They're supposed to have a heightened sense of smell. But actually, in ODST, you're less likely to be noticed when sneaking up on them if you crouch walk than if you run up to them, I guess because it's quieter.
sniper rifles being referred to as snipers
That's actually pretty common (and not just in video games) [editline]04:11PM[/editline]
No Sniper Rifle Isn't slang. And a Sniper isn't just a person, it can be used to describe the weapon.
Sniper is slang for the term "Sniper Rifle" Sniper can be used to describe an actual marksmen that is using a sniper "There's a sniper on that hill!" Or it can be used to describe the gun "Hand me that sniper" It all depends on the context of it. I'm sick of people arguing about this shit because soldiers use the slang term all the time.

Re spawning. If I die I never want to be alive in the game again.
Rifle+scope=Sniper Rifle+ NO scope = rifle
No. A sniper rifle is designed for long range combat, whether it has it's scope attached or not has no bearing on whether it is a sniper rifle or not. Also, a regular rifle with a scope attached is not a sniper rifle, it's just a rifle with a scope.
having dot sights which turns into a 6x scope when you look in it just like in that resident evil movie: skip to 0:38
Rifle+scope=Sniper Rifle+ NO scope = rifle
Rifle plus scope equals rifle with scope. Not a sniper rifle.
